The Glore Psychiatric Museum is an award-winning museum chronicling the 145-year history of the state hospital and centuries of mental health treatment. Housed in the former 1874 State Lunatic Asylum, it is the largest of its kind in the world and is highly recommended as a bucket list visit. Voted a top museum, it offers a fascinating, unsettling, and touching experience that provides insight into past treatments, showcasing some shocking methods and a detailed collection of medical items. Entry includes admission to the entire St. Joseph Museums Complex, which features the Black Archives, Native American and History Galleries, and the Doll Museum. There are more than just psychiatric exhibits, with black and American Indian heritage exhibits from the area. The museum and the other museums on this campus are very nicely done with great attention to detail. It is a very interesting and informative five-star experience with a lot of information, most of it pretty amazing. The staff is very friendly and user-friendly. Visitors should take several hours to see it all and take it all in. The time and money invested are definitely worthwhile. It is a unique experience and highly recommended for all, including children.
The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. Some of the items are a bit creepy and overall hard to stomach. History is not pretty. It is amazing to see how far we have come. Would recommend!
