Enjoyable place to browse for books. I found some sheet music for a reasonable price. Staff was helpful.

I live in the neighborhood and I have passed the store many times, but never got a chance to go in. Then I had a book I wanted to get my dad for Christmas, and also a Bible since I just started going to church again. I didn't know it was a used bookstore, but the clerk at the counter sure gave me a rather nasty attitude when he informed me of such. His facial expression and tone reminded me of my grandma when she wanted to make me feel very, very small. he did point me towards the Bibles, and I found a nice one with lots of cool stuff pressed between the pages like a leather bookmark, and a rose, and it was only six dollars. I used to love used bookstores like that when I was a kid and I would take in stacks of books to trade for store credit. But the lady who checked me out was also rather of a cold disposition, so I'm not sure I want to go back in there again. I didn't exactly feel welcome. i'm always polite and friendly wherever I go, and I don't take it well when storeclerks are abrupt with me, especially because I spent most of my adult life working in customer service, and if I acted like that, I would be in hot water big time. I slogged through it my whole life, thinking that when I was grown up and had money to buy things, I would also get the VIP treatment. Wrong. I so infrequently get good service anywhere these days that it actually makes my day when I do. Dunaway is not one of those places. No point in going back here when there's plenty of little free libraries all over the place. Tell the employees to check their attitudes and be a little bit more welcoming especially when I told them I've never been there before. I'm exactly the sort of person who would normally be a repeat customer, but I really don't want to go in somewhere where I don't feel welcome. .

I loved this old bookstore. It reeks of old books. It's a fascinating place to browse and explore . It has an interesting charm about it, and I wish I had had more time .

Great store, great selection of books, records, and related items. Very friendly owner and staff. Wish we lived closer so we could visit the store more often.

A great place to browse through old books on almost any subject. And books not quite so old as well. The atmosphere is quite appealing. Check out the basement collection as well.I managed to make it over to this bookstore for the first time in a few years. It survived the pandemic. Dunaway Books is still a great place for browsing books. They have old records, CD's, and movie posters as well. Be sure to check out the lower level for more material.

For sure among the best, if not the best, used bookstores in the STL area! Thanks!

A sample of the books I have acquired from this fine establishment/community staple. I had 7 grand worth of books intentionally destroyed by an back in 2021. Took a couple years off of getting any books because it just made me sad knowing that it would take years to rebuild what was lost. A close friend who lives in TGS recommended this bookstore, and I am extremely grateful he did. The staff here have great personalities. I usually avoid a lot of spaces because my job takes a lot out of me. This is one of those few places worth going on off days that actually is invigorating and never a negative experience. The decor is tasteful and the setup easy to navigate. Many times, the only noise I will hear during visits is the soft creak of the basement steps from a customer's gait. The second I walk through the door, my blood pressure lowers. Best of all, the reasonable prices have allowed me to actually afford and enjoy re-collecting ? as an early career mid-20s person. Very grateful for this business and the staff here.

The only thing I would ask of this incredible place is to maybe get pictures up on the website. You give detailed descriptions, but there's nothing like seeing what you're getting! Plus it would maybe save time snapping a couple of pictures instead of writing out a description for each book - I don't know! Some books do have pictures up, but most aren't pictures of the actual book for sale. Top notch store and staff regardless. Easily my favorite book store!

Such a cozy bookstore! It is deceptively big and they have the biggest variety I’ve ever seen in an independent bookstore. Definitely something for everyone. There’s a downstairs as well as a mezzanine. The basement is huge and it took me a minute to find my husband in the back stacks. So many books and crannies! The staff were very friendly. I’m currently eight months pregnant and when we checked out, one of the employees gave us a little ocean magnet set for our future baby boy for free. I thought that was so thoughtful! We would come here all the time if we were downtown more often.

Dunaway Books is the optimal spot for the serious used book shopper. This is not a spot for finding the sorts of tattered dime novels one finds at HPB or the like; instead this is a place for discovering a missing academic work for your home library or an unexpected treasure or (my personal favorite reason for a visit) quality sheet music and opera scores! It’s also a great store for book collectors, but that’s not a world I know well enough to comment on at length.

Everything about this place is great. The atmosphere is so nice and the staff is so friendly and helpful I would have expected higher prices. The prices are great. You can go here and buy a load of books for the same price or cheaper than Amazon and still support an awesome local business. My favorite book store.

This book store is for a very specific audience. 95% of the books are non-fiction. Which is fine, but is not what is advertised or what I want. Has a very very small selection of sci-if/horror/fantasy books.

Wow. This isn't some curated corporate bookstore carrying the novels-of-the-week from Nora Roberts and James Patterson. It's a completely off-the-hinges used bookstore meant for the serious aficionado, and the quantity of books reminded me of Powell's in Portland. You'll find some of everything. Book of Ogden Nash poetry near the front entrance. Book of convolution integrals downstairs. Stacks of sheet music. First editions. An absolute ton of material on religion and especially Judaism. If you want to spend 3 hours browsing, this is the place to go. This is now my favorite bookstore in St. Louis, and I plan on going back this week for a proper browsing session.

What an incredible place! Just went for an event yesterday. It smells like books. Their selection is great. There's a piano and sometimes talented people play it. Their music event yesterday was really nice, and then the poetry readings were excellent too. I can't wait to come back.
