Wilderness Park is a versatile and scenic outdoor area suitable for walking, biking, and exploring nature. Visitors enjoy a fun walk through the park's trails, with some noting that they got lost but were able to find their way back. It’s recommended to leave a pinpoint of your location before starting, to avoid confusion. The park features a variety of trails that are smooth, fast, and mostly hard-packed, making them easily rideable on gravel bikes or beach cruisers—mountain bikes are not required. The terrain is mostly flat with grassy areas that have been recently mowed, and the scenery is beautiful, with tall trees, prairie grasses, and glimpses of a river along parts of the trail. Although some background traffic can be heard, the views remain peaceful and enjoyable. Birdwatching and spotting squirrels and deer are common activities here. The park offers multiple trail connections, including under Old Cheney Road, Warlick Blvd, and the Rock Island walk bridge. Visitors often bike or walk multiple miles, with some covering over 14 miles between Wilderness Park and the Jamaican North trail. The park's diverse terrain includes a ravine, a stream, and open prairie, making every visit interesting. However, the park is relatively narrow, with the highway and railroad on either side, so it can be somewhat noisy. The area is popular, especially in fall, but visitors should check for ticks and wash clothing afterward. Overall, Wilderness Park provides a beautiful, accessible outdoor experience, perfect for those seeking a mix of nature, trails, and light adventure.
