Keith County Court House was for us but a brief respite on the lonely thunderstorm-laden drive from Omaha to Fort Collins, an oasis in the I-80 wilderness. Yes people probably do still drive from Omaha to Fort Collins, or I like to believe we weren't the only ones. Mere minutes off the exit ramp and over the mighty South Platte River is a glorious departure from all that Great Plains architecture. Goodbye Romanesque Revival, move over Renaissance; the Sixties are here! So rectangular, so concrete, so Nebraska-red/white. From the giant PULL handled metal/glass doors to the concrete-block overlay, a tornado could carry this to South Florida to outlast the next hurricane. Floridians would welcome another place to shelter-in-place fitting in with all that Art Deco. We only regretted we couldn't take the tour, but the Veteran's memorial out front is open all year. On a positive note: closed court = walls open. Next stop: grocery store for some Nebraska corn, which we will certainly enjoy once we get our kid out of lockup for that wall-scaling.
