I would just like to make it be known that stereotyping is still a huge problem in today's society. Monday night I went into the Saint John East side Sobeys to purchase some fruit and juices. When entering the store I grabbed two oranges and proceeded to the back of the store to grab juice, while looking for pineapple juice I saw the security guard pass me multiple times but didn't really think much off it. When I was unable to find the last item on my list I asked one of the employees to give me a hand finding it. Sadly she worked in the smoke shop but had someone paged to come assist me. Nobody came to help me so the same lady from the smoke shop had somebody paged again. While waiting I had an elderly security guard approach me and say "I know what you did" me having done nothing just said "what" and after that he replied with multiple accusations of having done something and then told me that I had put oranges in my pocket. After denying this he threatened to have me arrested. At this point I was beginning to get upset and requested to speak with his boss. His response was "I am the boss" I continued to insist to speak to his boss he then said his boss was in Moncton and he refused to contact him for me. So with no luck and him trying to walk away and tell me he would call the police if I didn't stop asking. I asked why he would accuse me of such a thing and he said "I saw you walking in looking like this" motioned to my clothes and made fun of my walk. I had a visible tattoo, jewelry and was dressed like a typical teenager. Now very offended I continued asking to speak with his boss and he called the cops, at this point the managers from the deli and the floor had both come over and began speaking with me and tried to convince me it wasn't worth waiting for the police. Now it really was not worth my time to sit and argue over two for one 75 cent oranges. But I was quite upset with the security guard calling me a liar, thief, and blatantly stereotyping me. The cops arrive ask me what happened and tell me they are unable to view the video surveillance I requested and tell me I am free to continue shopping. I left to go buy my things at Walmart. On my way out the store manager did mutter a sorry about that under his breath. Afterwards I come to find out this same security guard accused my 15 year old sister and her friends of stealing a cake only months prior. I want everyone to know if you are a young person with either tattoos, flat beak hats, shiny jewelry, or any other stereotypical hooligan feature, be extremely weary of shopping at this location because there is a strong chance you will be pegged as a thief and harassed or intimidated by security.
