Propane near Exeter, NH

“The prices and fees are slightly high but not really the reason for this review.

Yesterday I had my propane tank refilled, just like the other times I've had it refilled. The process is painless, and completely taken care of from me. That's about as much positive I can say.

After the refill yesterday I started to note a very strong smell of propane in my house. Instantly I shut off the boiler and closed off the tank and gave a call to Haffner. The after hours call went smoothly, albeit a little slow! There's a possibile gas leak going on. But I get through it and am told to wait for a call. Keep in mind, I was never asked if the tank was shut and/or the boiler turned off at this point. Within a few minutes I get a call. The person I spoke to was extremely unhelpful. Again, no mention of shutting the tank off, or any sort of preventative measures. I was told that he was over an hour away and that I could be charged (I couldn't fully understand if I would be charged if there was a leak or wasn't but either is ridiculous). Basically it sounded like he was trying to convince me to say that it's probably nothing. We left it off that he would call me back in 15 minutes since he was driving and I couldn't fully understand what he was saying. To be clear, it's now 20 minutes since I reported this and not a single person told me to do anything other than wait. 15 minutes later I get a phone call from someone else and that they were 20 minutes away and heading over, at this point I confirmed that I had shut everything off but still no urgency from anyone. Overall it took around 45 minutes for someone to come check things out.

I'd like to mention that, while I knew there likely was no actual issue, I didn't like how I was attempted to be pressured into not getting help. There was a moment where I thought about calling 911 but decided against it because I was able to get someone in reasonably quick, but in hindsight I definitely should have called 911. 40 minutes for a possible emergency means that if I wasn't aware of how propane tanks were and how to shut it off and there was an issue. I'd likely would have perished by then.

The tech that came out was extremely nice and helped reassure me by doing a leak test. He noticed the really strong smell of propane both outside and inside the house, as well as confirming a loose bleeding valve. Overall, hopefully, I don't run into a problem again, but I definitely won't be calling haffner first, I'll be calling 911. Changing propane providers is not cheap, so unfortunately I'm stuck with them as a customer, but I suspect I won't last too much longer with them.”
