Having completed a History Tour with Alan today, my wife and I left feeling that we had done the one thing in Portsmouth no visitor would want to miss. Fascinating, informative, and simply fun, Alan spent an hour and a half covering 400 years of incredible history with our small group, and we could not be more appreciative. He knew absolutely everything and we were interested in absolutely everything he said. Thanks Alan!!!

I had previously thought of The Portsmouth Historical Society as a wonderful place to check in to see what was up in Portsmouth before setting out for the day, but as I entered, I was warmly greeted and invited to enjoy a video describing the history and founding of Portsmouth. After that I enjoyed an art exhibition of local artists and then, upstairs, my Mother and I saw the exhibition on children's book illustrators, and were excited to be able to purchase those books in the gift shop for our nieces and nephews. We actually spent several hours gaining new insight into life in Portsmouth, past to present, which enriched our visit immensely. And don't miss visiting the Portsmouth Historical Society's Gingerbread House Contest & Exhibition from November 24th - December 30th. You won't be disappointed!

Very disappointed in the unkind staff. I've been a volunteer for almost a year, then one of the welcome center staff members bullied me for talking with a guest for just two minutes, shouting at me saying I should mind my own business and not waste their time. Meanwhile, the guest kept asking me questions, so I didn't want to be rude. The volunteer coordinator did not care at all when I brought this to her attention. Not a very welcoming group of people.

Jeff did a wonderful job educating us about the history of Portsmouth. He presented the information in an entertaining way while we got some steps in around the town. It helps give you a lay of the land. Def recommend!

Highly recommend the walking tours! Both times I've gone, our guide was both informative and entertaining, with deep local knowledge and experience - not just reading from a script. And don't miss the gift shop!

This summer I went on both the Women of Portsmouth and the Daily Historical Walking tour. Knute & Sabina were wonderful! They had a ton of local knowledge and had a ton to share! We lucked out with the weather and the walking route was easy and manageable. Even as a local, I learned a ton! Highly recommend both, I will be back

my family and I did the historical walking tour in portsmouth new hampshire. Our tour guide was amazing and so knowledgeable. It was a hot day and he made sure to get us out of the sun as much as possible when we stopped to look at a building or historical site. He could answer any questions that we had and even brought pictures of what places looked like in past years. Jeff Thomson was a one of the best tour guides we've ever had. 5 stars!!

I remember when this building ? use to be the Portsmouth Public Library. I like the new ? one better!I enjoyed my visit because I enjoyed seeing aspects of Portsmouth history, some of which I remember seeing. Seeing a few photos and news ?️ articles about what Portsmouth used to look like, especially Market Square, I found interesting. The Seacoast African Cultural Center I found to be a little lacking. There wasn't much history about the Colonial period, what Portsmouth was like after the Revolution, especially about Ona Judge, or the Civil Rights Movement.I am looking forward to going on the tours that they offer. There is a gift shop. I found out that the old English telephone ? booth is out for repair and will return. If you are not an old-time Portsmouth resident, it might not interest you. If you want to learn about Portsmouth, it's a good place to start.
