First off let me say that I appreciate my shopping experiences at both of the locations in the Portsmouth area. Market Baskets have a wide variety of goods and at good prices, that being said I had a rather bad experience with the butchery dept and a butcher at the Lafayette store location.Normally I shop at the Newington store , but as I go to the gym nearby I came to the Lafayette branch to shop.At the other store I can get liver, beef heart, chicken gizzards and kidneys for my dog as a treat in her meals and to maintain her health and a good coat. I did not find any at this location and thought maybe I just couldn’t see the trees for the forest. I rang for a butcher and a man with short grey hair, about 5’8” tall with a square frame came out. Unfortunately I did not get his name off his tag.I asked him if he had heart, and he clipped “Nope” , then I asked about gizzards, “ Nope “, then I guess I made the pho paw of asking as the other store had these if he was just out at the moment. He gave me a smirk and said we never carry those. I joked that my dog was out of luck then, to which he replied testily, “ Aisle 11” I wasn’t sure what he meant and I said excuse me? “ You want dog food, that’s where it is. “ he said in a Im done with you tone of voice. After lifting his hand and pointing me away. I was dismissed. And he turned around and went back to his kitchen. If I wanted kibble I know where it is, I certainly DID NOT NEED THE ATTITUDE! I will not come back to this store again because of this.I doubt these reviews are ever read, but if they are Market Basket needs this man to take a class in servicing a customer politely. I’ll be going to the Newington store only now. Guess it’s still a win win for Market Basket though.

We have two Market Baskets here in the Portsmouth area. This one is by far my favorite; I will not go to the other one. This one off of Lafayette Rd. is always clean and tidy and checking out is usually fast. I would say that many of the cashiers are not friendly but you find this everywhere these days. The big corporations pay people poorly and expect long work hours. And many customers are not friendly either. I experience more rudeness from other customers than the staff anywhere these days. But this Market Basket is always well stocked and there rarely is a long line during the mid-day when I shop. I can always find everything I need there excepting Pomegranate seeds and hot spicy versions of salsa. I have noted that New England supermarkets tend to stray away from stocking spicy foods. Other than those few things this is one of my favorite places to shop for groceries in the Portsmouth area.

This location is particularly clean and friendly. Had everything I was looking for and when I couldn't find a styrofoam cooler, not only did an employee walk me over, he let me know the price and got me a lid.

Literally almost impossible to get your bread sliced here. Most of the time there is no one in the bakery. Today I was lucky enough to find someone there, but she told me she couldn't use the bread slicer and there was no else that could do it for me. I didn't know you had to be qualified to use a bread slicer.

Very good food selection, you won't find extra things, it is a grocery store.

Finally-a store that understands customer needs. On a very busy Saturday I went in looking for Sea Pak Budweiser battered Cod. Three people helped me and the frozen clerk said she would order this, but on Wed. they found it discontinued. Priced much lower than Hannaford or Shaws I knew from doing resets in stores what goes out comes back in stock-example Suddenly Salad, which they have. All in all every person I encountered today exemplified no nonsense service-no mis trust here. And saw a previous co-worker , when I worked for BJ's. A best choice store for me coming from Dover. Hope to see you all again soon. My next visit less stellar-on a Tuesday in the AM I was unable to get Celery bagged, and the milk was not delivered then. Spectacular was a Chef Salad in Kitchen, although reduced it was completely fresh and restaurant quality. I was also happy to see Fantini French rolls on a separate rack in deli when the bread aisle had none. I saw on the Sunkist citrus box, in produce, the carcinogen IMAZALIL and THIABENDAZOLE listed and could not get an answer from the clerk on his way up front. The Canadian sleeved celery was filled with dirt. On todays visit I was delighted to buy 2 pks. Fresh Beef Patties, 24 oz.-$1.99, use by today, and I froze both. The Triscuit family size rang up as $4.50 but the shelf tab had last weeks sale price.
