Really disappointed in our experience at The House by the Side of the Road today. I went with my family and friends, we have been going for many years since we found the place. My friend is a person of color and the only in our group. He was wrongfully accused of stealing a card from the store. The woman immediately in a nasty tone said they had been watching him and saw him have two cards in his hand and then one. He offered to show his bag once accused and the woman kept escalating her tone saying they have him on camera and they will the police. After a few minutes of the woman berating my friend he dumped his bag and showed how he didnt take anything. She was extremely rude and disrespectful to him with no evidence or actual ground to stand on. We payed for our items we had picked out and left. Will not return due to how this situation was created and handled by the staff member. Please educate the staff on racial profiling.

This place has a great collection of succulents, cacti and other house plants. I have purchased several plants in the last couple of years. At least five of the plants I purchased had mealy bugs appear shortly after bringing them home! I returned one plant and was given a credit towards another purchase. The rest I just tossed. ( I live over an hour away). Not one of my older plants have ever had bugs. I have been growing and collecting plants for over 50 years. So done with this place.

This place is AMAZING and well worth a drive. It's huge! They have multiple, long rooms full of every kind of houseplant I could ever imagine - from bonsais, to succulents, to stuff for fairy gardens, to your hot, trendy plants, to old stand-buy's like pothos and philodendrons. Everything your heart could desire. And it's so big there were whole rooms I didn't even go in. There seemed to be a room devoted to outdoor plants, mostly mums in the early fall when I was there. They also had a nice selection of potting soils. The staff was personable and knowledgeable. Overall, a great experience!

Saw this place on a Tik Tok video and knew I HAD to come by! Talk about an INCREDIBLY vast selection of both indoor and outdoor plants to chose from. Their plants looked well cared for and healthy which is always a good sign! They have a cute Turtle and Koi pond and a couple of kitty cats walking around as well so be sure to stop and say hi! They do also have a gift shop and sell lots of different pots for planting. Plants were well priced, I am bummed though because one of the plants I bought never made it into the box I took home. Would recommend if you're looking to grow your house plant collection.

Love this place. Incredible selection, helpful, and SO much better than big box stores. My go to gardening place along with Maple Hill Nursery in Swanzey

Came here on Easter after calling to check out the hours, looked around, picked out some plants and a pot. Sister and I went at about 5:30 and bought about $50 worth of products from them each. As we're cashing out the woman cashing me out, says to us "you are being rude we have an Easter dinner to get to" I was left speechless and she continues to question if I think we're being rude. We were cashing out at 6:02 pm... 2 minutes after close. I said to the woman 'what a great Easter spirit to have towards customers bringing you business'. Her response was taking my receipt, crumpling it and throwing it in front of me. Will not be back. If you have a dinner to get to, adjust your hours or give a 15 minute warning saying you have to close right at six. They could have gone about this a completely different way. We are respectful girls and we were excited to check it out, but this tantrum thrown towards two young ladies was completely uncalled for and honestly scary to be treated that way.

The staff there is so rude. Today was our second visit. Most of the staff were NOT wearing masks. When any of us asked a question, it was as if we were inconveniencing THEM. There were at least four staff up front and we were the only customers in the store...God forbid you help us or educate us. I guess if you're going to be a shopper in their store, you need to go in knowing EXACTLY what you're looking for and the name of it. Wow! Between all of us, we spent over $200.00. Their plants aren't even worth it. Yes they have a big selection but things are overpriced, NOTHING is labeled so who the hell knows what you're buying. No description on the plant, no names, no directions (high sun, low sun, water light, heavy etc...) or for goodness sake, how about at least putting a NAME on each plant so I can google it???? They have two cats which are cute but if you have a cat allergy, beware. Their turtles look terrible and unhealthy. My son specializes in that area and he was shocked. I will never go back there. To think I drove a hour to shop at that place...wow. Never again...lesson learned. Save your money and shop local from people who appreciate you.

My family and I have been customers of HBSR for decades, and have spent hundreds of dollars each year on seasonal plants, greens etc. Last week my son passed away, and yesterday I called HBSR to Order some mums and sugar pumpkins for his memorial service. Before I even got a full sentence out, the woman on the phone said very curtly "we have no mums left". Then I asked about sugar pumpkins. Instead of saying let me check, she shouted across the way in my ear to someone outside . Then "nope" all out of pumpkins. I then asked for a recommendation on who might still have some, and again, just a rude no. Not sorry I couldn't help you. Just tough for me. The fact that these items were not available is irrelevant. That I can understand. It was the callous, rude, non caring customer non service made even worse by my grief that made me decide I will never stop at this place again. Ever. Nor will my friends or extended family. No excuse for rudeness. And by the way, I called another nursery who didn't have what I wanted either, but she went above and beyond to get them for me. She was kind. And she cared about a customer in need. Good PR goes a long way when you run a business, and HBSR has failed.

I love this place. This was the first greenhouse I ever been to and definitely set the bar super high for all the other greenhouses I went to afterwards. They have a great selection of houseplants, outdoor plants, and edible vegetation. The pricing is very good. I bought a couple of polkadot plants and ivy for around $30. I would've bought more but their houseplants section was depleted by the time I had gone. This place is a five stars if not for some employees who did not dawn masks.

I mean this place is the REAL deal. They have everything for your indoor/outdoor gardening needs and so much more. HBTSOTR is very much raved about on a plant enthusiast group I'm a part of on Facebook so, of course, I had to drive the hour and a half to check it out and it did not disappoint. The indoor plant section was what I was most excited about. They had mostly every unique gem I was looking for. As this is the first time I had visited, I've HEARD they receive new additions to the store on a daily basis. The pot/planter section is overwhelming in the best way. They offer their most unique pots/planters through out the green house and if I had no budget, I'd go WILD. They have animals (yes, animals) in the building that you can look at, don't touch though because the cat seems very grumpy....in the cutest way (see picture below to get what I'm talking about). HBTSOTR also has a massive gift shop that smells like freshly popped popcorn (bonus: you can snack on said free popcorn while walking around!). When it comes down to it, I'm just really happy I was able to experience this place. I'm currently venturing into the world of houseplants and HBTSOTR gave me a really impressive head start!

Great selection of plants year round. In the winter and in the spring this is a nice place to just go and get some spa therapy. The parking is a little awkward right off of Rte 101 and it's easy to walk into an area that you shouldnt be in but other than those two everything else is a possitive. Great selection of air plants, terrarium plants, ferns and all the other plants that you struggle to find any where else. Even for the outdoor planting they have a great selection of bushes, trees and other outdoor perennial and annual flowers to make your flower and veg gardens as desirable as possible.

I am lucky enough to live just up the hill, Mt Monadnock, from this nursery. I am pretty sure this family is on it's 3rd generation. They support local artists and have had the same employees for decades. The selection of plants is beyond what pictures can show. They are kind people. The florists are talented so there's that too. If I need candles, Yankee. If I need to send a plant or flowers. If I want an new orchid. Water plants. Pond supplies. Advice...I care about the people and, as a local and a good customer, I am so spoiled but holiday travelers will find them open on holidays! All around, definitely one of my happy places.
