I recently rented a U-Haul cargo van that was advertised as $19.95, but my total ended up being $132 for less than 4 hours of use and just 38 miles driven. This included $25 for insurance, and I also spent $16 on gas to refill the tank, so I spent $148 total on this rental!
The most frustrating part was the misleading mileage charges. I was told the first 100 miles were free, but when I returned the van, I was charged $1.89 per mile after 20 miles a major misunderstanding that completely changed the expected cost.
Had I known the real pricing upfront, I would have saved my time and money, by choosing to drive to Home Depot as a rental option. This experience felt deceptive and not at all in line with the advertised pricing.
Stop promoting your rentals as only $19.95 it’s simply not true! U-Haul needs to do better with pricing transparency.
Edit: In response to the President. Let me clarify a few things.
U-Haul’s marketing of rentals as “only $19.95” is misleading at best. Even without the $25 insurance charge, my total still exceeded $100 due to the standard per-mile rate. That’s over four times the advertised price for a short rental under four hours and only 38 miles.
In comparison, I’ve used Home Depot’s rental service several times. Their pricing has always been more transparent and reasonable for example, a two-hour rental (even going over the 90-minute limit) has never cost me more than $50 total. For short-distance moves with the same sized cargo van, Home Depot clearly provides better value.
Regarding availability, I was told the only options that day were in Philadelphia, but that is incorrect. I checked and found Home Depot Cherry Hill had rentals available at the same time I picked up from the U-Haul in Winslow. The only reason I used your U-Haul location is because it’s near where I live. However, driving a little farther to Cherry Hill would still saved me at least $50.
To be clear, the “only $19.95” marketing is highly deceptive, and my experience shows that the actual cost is far higher. This kind of pricing strategy misleads customers and damages trust.

I wanted a pick up but unfortunately they did not have one. They did had a van which it was very clean and smooth to drive. The lady who helped me was very fast and professional. used it for what I needed and it worked better than if I had a pick up. Thank you again

I was Called just hours before a planned and paid for 6 hour trip stating they didn’t have my rental (Saturday morning) and they could get one until the next afternoon (Sunday afternoon) Absolutely terrible service, terrible communication and will not use this company again

You were out of regular dollies. I requested 2 but there was none at the store. The girl who handled the transaction was amazing. She advised me they had no regular dollies at the moment even though I had reserved one. She said the only dolly available was a larger equipment dolly which cost more. I advised her I wasn't moving anything large just boxes and if I could have the large dolly at the regular price since they didn't have any available and the larger dolly wasn't being rented. She advised me I would have to ask the manager who was standing behind me the whole time talking to an employee. I turned around and explained to the manager the situation and if I could have the larger dolly for the regular dolly price. She responded to me telling me no I could get a regular dolly at regular price next week when all of her dollies come back from down south. Then turned back around and started talking with the employee again. The lady at the register apologized for the rude treatment and response of the manager and politely and kindly as she could finished my transaction.

The team at Cedar Brook u-haul saved my day!! After another uHaul location cancelled last minute, Teal at Cedar Brook discovered the issue and took the initiative to get to the bottom of the mix and up find me a solution asap — all at her own initiative, just to help a stranger. I haven’t had such a wonderful and helpful customer service experience in ages, can’t say thank you enough for turning a logistical horror story into a simple, smooth and stress-free task.

Visiting with a friend to pick up uhaul. Very clean environment. Spacious parking lot which extremely important.
