If I could give a 0 star I will, first of allI was looking online for the best price for a 4 days rental and was arround 200/300 for some stupid reason I pick Payless cause look like a good price , but what I dint know was that I would get 2 extra charges,Pay 210 for the reservation then I got charged 250 dolars more for fees of location transportation energy saving and I pick the gas saving option to bring the car empty and the ez pass, and I was like okay 250’morenit kinda make sense is a lot but okay, for my surprise when I drop the car that I was thinking to bring earlier but I read that it may be an extra charge so I bring it “on time “ but like an hour late I got charged for a fully day of rental plus the magnificent gas and insurance of that day so at the end I pay 560 :/ feels like and scam first and last time whit Payless or budget so dissatisfied, also when you get the car they’re super friendly but once they got you they don’t care suck a bad experience

Would give no stars if possible. No customer service. Hour wait to pick up reserved car. No one present to receive returned car. Will not use again.

Very few reviews on here. I felt I should update and let y'all know how it went for me. I booked online through booking.com for 3 days Oct4-7th. 3:30pm. Requested a Jeep Cherokee but end up with a Ford Explorer. Similar so no complaints there. $221. The shuttle at Newark took us to the rental area was fast. Payless and Budget is the same line to pickup car. My goodness the line when I stood was 10 people ahead of me. Took 45mins with ONLY 1 worker at Budget. Then finally a worker came to help on the Payless counter. Walking out now there were 25 people standing in line. While the Sixt the next counter had 3 workers and no line!!! And even Dollar counter had 3 workers. Not sure if this was just a bad day and workers called out here but unacceptable!!!

10-day rental through Priceline last week and had a decent experience. There was a bit of a mis-communication between the desk and the lot on what vehicle to put me in, but it got resolved and everyone was pleasant. The vehicle was clean and well maintained. I'll definitely rent again from here.

THE WROSE CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER…..It was a terrible mess from the beginning. I started working with a young Lady name felica when I first approached her I asked her if she needed the car rental confirmation number she stated no just to give her my id and credit card, so I did she they proceeded the process the transaction I stated to her that the time of drop off for the car was stated in correct she then told me it says 10 pm when my contract to my email said 10 am. Anyways so we get to the end and she stated I had to pay $903 n I was confused cause I had already paid for the car in advance so I asked her again if she needed the contract number because the car was already paid for. She then asked for it with a whole attitude because she pulled up the wrong car reservation. Mind you the whole time she was doing my transaction she was also doing another lady”s transaction and trying to help her coworker out again. So she finally processed the correct contract and again I ask her about the time of drop off that it is incorrect she stated it’s okay just give us a call and we fix it so I said okay thank you have a great day n left. Now to the return date on Sunday July 30, 2023 from 8:30 am to about 1pm I try calling the car company and also the customer service which I kept getting the run around and hanged up on. So I finally got to the car company and returned the car at 6:36 pm way before the 10pm time drop off should have been. So I go to the car counter top and Felica isn’t at work . So it was a gentleman working I explained everything to him and also showed him all the email confirmation he stated he couldn’t do anything felica has to be the one to do something. I then waited a hour for a manger to come who stated his name was Manny and he was going to get to the bottom of this. He took all my information and pictures of everything. Here we are 3 days later and I just received a alert I was charged a extra $300 for the mistake a lazy worker made. This was a terrible experience.

I don't understand all the bad reviews - I had a great experience with the Newark Payless location. I rented through Expedia, got the car at a great price, got a free upgrade from the counter staff, and returning the car was super fast with the lady helping me dealing with a refueling issue with no hassle. I'd highly recommend renting from this Payless location, just taking one star off the review because the car could have been cleaned a little better between renters.

We booked this car weeks in advance, but the person we booked it under had a temporary license, so we couldn’t rent it under their name. Admittedly, that part is on us, but they had no way of remedying it by putting it under another persons name in our party. However, they didn’t tell us this, and they had us call many different people over the course of FOUR AND A HALF HOURS only to turn us away. We went to Avis next door and got a car in 30 minutes with no prior reservation. After all of this fuss, we got to our hotel at FOUR AM WHEN WE PLANNED FOR MIDNIGHT. Luckily we booked a higher end place that let us in any time, or we would’ve been sleeping outside. Rental place very nearly ruined our vacation. Go to Avis, NOT HERE!!! DO NOT GO HERE, IT IS NOT WORTH IT! YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!

Do not rent from Payless. There are no rental facilities other than at the airport to switch if the car has issues. The airport rental desk is chaos. Did not get the type car I contracted. Takes forever to reach customer service then had the supervisor hang up on me. Worst experience. Only gave 1 star because I couldn't post this without it. Negative stars.

My experience with Payless was great from start to finish. It's near the Air Tran. Quick (less than 15 minutes in line with 4 ppl ahead of me), easy, friendly, and relatively inexpensive. I can't relate to any of the negative reviews here. I love the ones about dirty windows though. OMG the cars are parked outside and the windows get rained on (hits forehead with palm of hand)!

40+ minute wait in line (Newark EWR), then no cars ready to go, then one assigned, but told someone else got it. Then after another 15 minutes an SUV given to me, - I wanted and had signed up for a mid-sized car.Even then, when I got to the lot, another customer was in the SUV I was assigned. Only thanks to that customer being a good human being, and a little help from a manager, I did get that KIA SUV. Overall, the experience with Payless, really sucked!I should note, that the counters next to Payless/Dollar, were Sixt, and Budget/Thrifty. They were both processing customers in less than 10 minutes.I have rented with Payless/Dollar before. This was the worst experience ever with them.

Waited in line for over 45 mins. Staff unprofessional and gave no directions for how to retrieve vehicle. Tire pressure light was on during entire rental period of 2 days. I was not going back to the rental counter to report the issue because that probably would have taken 2 more hours. I just put air in the tire myself.

Done believe the low prices! They have huge add-ons upon return! Very unhappy. Well never recommend our use them again.

Everything is good until you return the car. Then, they somehow rack up all these mysterious toll charges.

Booked a car here rather than near me in the city where I usually book in order to save money. Took the Path to another Path to a cab to get there. Made it to the front of a long line and the woman told me, "Oh did you book yesterday? Anyone who booked yesterday we're not giving cars." I was standing there with five bags I had lugged on the train and my child, ready to do the drive south. I literally started crying. Impassive lady just kept saying "sorry" in that way that means, "Move on, little lady." I said, "Why did you send me this confirmation e-mail instead of sending me a message that you had no car for me so I could try to find another way?" She said, "Oh, our system is slow. We didn't get to that yet." I stared at her in disbelief, crying. Nothing. I tried every other counter in that little rental car area. Every other place either said no or had something for almost three times the price; with the deposits, this put me over my credit limit. I couldn't cancel the trip because I had rented out my apartment to pay for it. Finally had to get on an Amtrak, one way ticket more than the rental car Payless had promised me for five days. I don't even know how I am going to get home. These people literally destroyed my entire vacation and didn't even care. Never ever ever again.I see that the company replied below but this reply does not address the problem. I booked the car 36 hours before picking it up, and I received a confirmation the day of the booking. All the company had to do was call to tell me so that I could have avoided going all the way out there and not having the chance to make an alternative plan. At minimum they could have shown some care and concern and made phone calls for me to try to help me find something at the airport instead of running from counter to counter, leaving my child alone with our bags and both of us so distraught. I always want to support working people and not blame staff but human kindness is always possible. And the company should include a huge warning about not being able to honor reservations that are less than 48 hours if that is the policy. You can't explain that after the fact as if it's something we should all know.
