Went to the Rockaway, New Jersey, store last night to pick up some Christmas things (Dec. 2023). I had a cart full. Got to the checkout and one cashier, with about five self-checkout. The cashier told me to do self-checkout. I told him I did not want to do self-checkout with a full cart of items. He ignored me. A line was starting to form. Someone, probably the manager, yelled that there are self-checkout registers. I said I did not want to do self-checkout. Waited, then asked the cashier if someone was going to check me out. He told me that, unfortunately, you have to do self-checkout. I left the cart full of merchandise right there and walked out. Self-checkout should be an option, not mandated. I'm a paying customer; why should I have to do their job and check myself out? Will never shop another Michaels. The formed line, they didn't look happy to have to do self-checkout either.
