We were SO blessed to find this little treasure of a place when we were stranded in Clayton during a terrible blizzard. The town was shut down and hotels were sold out but the owners at Eklund were so gracious and kind. This property was a beautiful retreat after a very scary day. Our family is so thankful to the owners for taking such good care of us. The hotel is lovely, a beautiful piece of history. Thank you for welcoming us during an emergency situation, we will be back to visit again for sure.

We were trapped by the winter storm that hit, traveling from Houston to Canada. This hotel is very nice! The rooms are well kept, the staff is personable, and extremely friendly. It was a very warm welcome, coming in from the cold!!! I'm thankful for this unexpected stay (weather) not only are the wife and husband duo friendly, but they made everyone who filed in from the storm, a warm spectacular dinner. This place is a must stop, from the authentic Scottish cashmere scarfs (unbelievably soft), to all the beautiful bead work, and so much more. Even if you don't need to stay, come in for a look, you will not be disappointed

I had a great time. The room was bigger than expected. The food was amazing! All the staff was so friendly. There may not be a lot in Clayton NM but this place is a shining star.

We enjoyed our overnight stop @ Hotel Eklund. We have driven by the hotel so many times passing through going on vacation but have never stopped but wanted to. So glad we did this time & broke up our travel. Absolutely beautiful and historic hotel. So many stories, great nostalgia, and antique furniture. Our room was like stepping into the past. Vanita, the receptionist, the breakfast host, & tour guide was so nice. She knows so much of the history of not only the hotel but also the Clayton,NM. Keith, the owner, was also present and very friendly. The beautiful bar and restaurant were not open during our stay but look forward to enjoying that next time. Highly recommend the Hotel Eklund to everyone and look forward to our next visit.Noteworthy details: Beautiful, historic, and friendly.

We have stayed here before and enjoyed the charm of this historic hotel. This trip, we paid for the second floor balcony suite. Unfortunately, the air-conditioning in the main room of the two room suite wasn't working. Management said they would reduce the price for the night, but they didn't. I haven't followed up for a refund. If you are off the beaten track in eastern NM, I would still say give them a try.Update, management contacted me provided a discount for the evening. The owner seems to be a very reputable dedicated person.

First the good - The hotel is awesome, rooms comfortable and plenty of space. Feels like you’re stepping back in time with the wood finished and antique look. The front desk check-in was friendly and receptive. Now the not so good - First, be known, there is a train that runs through town 1 block from the hotel. Cane through at 10pm, 2am, and 6am (give it take a few minutes), so if you’re expecting a sound sleep through the night, that’s a challenge.Second, the saloon/restaurant. Beautiful setup to sit and look at. Bar only has one brand of local liquor if you’re looking for a cocktail (New Mexico brand I believe is what they said). Menu is limited, and a little over-priced. We had the elk rolls as an appetizer which were outstanding. Wife had the pork chops which were fairly flavorful, but tough, and overpriced. I had the steak. Pretty bland, was reminiscent of a Bonanza or Golden Corral steak, and way overpriced. No salad or roll was served with either entree. Seating was limited, so it felt like our server was rushing us through the meal so they could seat another party, and keep the money train flowing. So, I’d stay at the hotel, if you can sleep through the train, and I’d eat elsewhere if given the choice, especially if you’re looking for a nice drink to kick back and relax with to complete your evening.

A great find on our way from Ft Worth to Colorado! Very nice historical lobby and dining room from late 1800s. Furniture & pictures of the Era all tell a story of family and life back in the day. We stayed in a queen room that was rustic but met our needs for the night. Only thing is it is close to hwy 87 & can be somewhat noisy from traffic. Overall a nice stay.Food & drinks: Ate at Hwy 87 restaurant for dinner in town. Very good along with service. The continental breakfast at hotel was very good also.

WOW, greeted by the charming Ms. Jo Beth who shared the history of the hotel and town, the room clean and bright western motif. Dinner was delightful, hostess Ms. Jeanette was very attentive along with the server Ms. Anne and the bartender Mr. Keith had a local distilled Rye whiskey to serve. A most wonderful experience on our bucket list. Thank all of you for making it special.
