Pancho Villa State Park, established in 1959, covers 60 acres and commemorates Villa’s raid in 1916, as well as fostering good relations between the United States and Mexico. The park is notable for its history, as it was the site of many firsts in US military history during the 1916 raid by Pancho Villa’s troops into Columbus, New Mexico. A knowledgeable docent provides an engaging presentation of the story, artifacts, and the raid’s aftermath, enhancing visitors’ understanding of this significant event. The park offers a quiet camping experience with spacious pull-through sites set in a garden-like environment. Visitors enjoy being close to the small town of Columbus and the nearby border with Mexico, only three miles away. Many appreciate the friendly staff, cleanliness of the park and restrooms, and the opportunity to dine at the Pink Store in Mexico. The surrounding area is rich with birdlife, and the park features a museum with informative videos, artifacts, and gardens that once served as a lookout tower. However, some infrastructure issues are noted, such as the non-operational dump station, restrooms, and playground facilities, which may affect the overall experience. Despite these, the park remains popular, especially due to its proximity to Mexico, where visitors can access services like dental care, pharmacies, and shopping. The park’s warm climate in winter, along with its historical significance and scenic beauty, makes it a unique destination for those interested in history, nature, and quiet outdoor recreation.
Very well put together and informative park of Pancho Villa’s raid into the US. It wasn’t that long ago, was it?
