Recommended as Best Value Because: The food is authentic New Mexican made from old family recipes. The portions are ample and prices are reasonable for good value dining.
Best for Southwestern Because: The food is authentic, tasty and for Santa Fe, reasonably priced.
Decked out in Southwestern colors, Mexican art and rugged vigas that stretch across the length of the ceiling, Cafe Castro is a popular mainstay among locals on the Santa Fe circuit. The kitchen churns out consistently decent and decently priced New Mexican fare, prepared straight up without pomp and circumstance. The menu is a litany of favorites: blue corn enchiladas smothered in red or green chile (or both), pork tamales, chile rellenos, taquitos, and puffed sopaipillas fit for two fists. The green chile won't make you drop your jaw to the floor in agony and defeat, but it leaves a measurable burn that's best washed down with a glass of sangría.
