My favorite surf shop in NYC without a doubt! Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great customer service and selection of boards.I was helped in choosing a new board that suited my preferences, experience level, the surf breaks at RB, etc. My first session on my 5'6 Firewire Too Fish was my best yet in RB. Huge step up from my last board.

Unrivaled location right by the beach and the A train stop. The staff are always super friendly, especially Dale, the owner. Great loyalty program, too - rent a board four times, get your fifth rental free.

Rented some surfboards here. My friend rented booties and gloves and a wetsuit. We had a great 2 hour surf session on a frigid day. So fun though. It cost me $15 to rent the board for 2 hours. Very reasonable. The staff is kind and nice. They let you change inside and store all your stuff there. Super nice of them, I don't know how we would've kept our stuff safe without them. Thanks!

Great place to rent surfboards, perfectly located next to train stop. Very nice and supportive staff. Helped us figure out the best day for surfing. Also had very good offers for clothes and shirts. Next time in NYC, this is the place to come back to :)

I wouldn’t be a surfer without breakwater. They are the original spot for board rentals and gear on 67th street. Always friendly and helpful whether you’re coming in for $5 wax or a $700 surfboard.

Surfline was showing 5 foot waves at Rockaway Beach on a warm, sunny, clear-sky Wednesday afternoon. There were relatively few surfers in the water, and no swimmers. I walked to the beach and confirmed with local surfers that the waves were good and that the surf area is a sandbank with practically no rocks/reef. Having just come back from living in Honolulu for almost a year, I was getting excited to get in the water again.I went in the shop looking for a rental but was turned away by two friendly shopkeepers as it was "too rough out there". I asked for alternate places where I could rent a board but all other places suggested turned out to be closed. I imagine in NYC it's a liability to rent surfboards when there are good waves out. However, I'm not used to not allowing the customers themselves make the call as to whether they want to risk the waves.TLDR they only rent surfboards when the waves are under 3 feet.

I just took my nephew into this shop to buy him a 3/4 for his birthday. Definitely not in season until the Spring. There were many to choose from but not easily accessible. As I said, they’re out of season. I had to walk around this small store to get help. I was told “ oh, they’re way up there, I’ll have to get a ladder” I stated that I understood. He then stated “ oh, it’ll take me a half hour at least” My husband and I waited 15 minutes. I chose 2 shirts while we were waiting. There was no one else in the store. Finally the sales person stated: “It will be an hour”. We walked out. Never, never again. A Saturday morning in February? What’s this place like in July? I’m sure this was not the owner. We were there to easily drop $300 at least.Easy sale. Never never again.

7 days ago I called all my local surf shops searching for a new 5/4 hooded wetsuit for my daughter. No one had any in stock. On a whim, I called Breakwater Surf Co which we stop by when we surf in the Rockaways. We showed up right at their normal closing time. They were super patient with us as my daughter tried on a few wetsuits. We made our purchase. On the way out they said when she tries it on at home if there is an issue just bring it back. Well she tried it on at home, it was too big, we drove back and found a better fitting one which was less expensive. They exchanged it and gave me the difference back. No questions asked and super friendly and helpful. I've been going to my local shops for decades and one in particular makes you feel like a criminal when I have to exchange something. Breakwater now has 2 new fans and we will be shopping there whenever possible. Support your surf shops.

Highly recommend this surf shop - all the workers are super friendly and they have great rates for board rentals/other purchases. The workers there are also very helpful in assisting with any purchases. The shop is located only a block from the beach and during the summers, they have a second beach-front location!I definitely recommend!
