The Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx is well-known as a destination for Italian restaurants, food shops and markets, but you need to distinguish between the good and truly ordinary. Antonio's Trattoria falls into the first category. Located just off Arthur Avenue, this is the real deal: welcoming and lively. The menu is what you might expect with plus-size portions of pastas, Parmigiana and meat. Also on offer are a varied array of brick-oven, thin-crust pizza. Sample it all with the hot antipasto platter for two with shrimp, baked clams, fried calamari, mussels and eggplant Parmigiana. Drinks are poured copiously by the chatty bartenders and host who will make you feel like you've eaten here every day of your life. An extensive choice of Amaro complements the wine list, which has a strong emphasis on Italian reds, whites and rosés. Outside Antonio's, you can pretend you remember the words to Dion and the Belmonts' hit "I Wonder Why," created right around the corner.
