About Prospect Park Carousel

The Prospect Park Carousel is a beloved attraction located in the Park’s Children’s Corner. Built in 1912 by renowned carousel designer Charles Carmel, it features 53 beautifully carved horses, along with a lion, a giraffe, a deer, and two dragon-pulled chariots. Restored in 1990 by the Prospect Park Alliance, the carousel remains in excellent condition and is one of the few wheelchair-accessible carousels in the United States. It is a popular spot for birthday parties and special events, offering a charming and nostalgic experience for visitors of all ages. The carousel is affordable, with rides costing only $3. Visitors often enjoy the nearby amenities, such as a snack bar with large water bottles, and the chance to sit and watch the horses and people go by. Its close proximity to the zoo makes it convenient for families exploring the park. During seasonal events, like Halloween, the carousel provides fun family activities, though visitors should be aware that some horses are stationary while others move up and down. Some visitors have noted that the carousel can be closed, possibly due to seasonal reasons, but it remains a highlight of Prospect Park. Its historical significance, beautiful craftsmanship, and accessibility make it a treasured part of the park’s attractions. Overall, the Prospect Park Carousel offers a delightful and economical experience, blending history, fun, and community in a scenic setting.
