Dr Appel was able to help us in our last days with our little guy. We have a different vet that we take our dog to, but we took him to Dr Appel to confirm our vets diagnosis since our vet gave such a dire diagnosis. Dr Appel was able to confirm and provide further information and identify more issues with him. He took the time to discuss the options. Unfortunately, our little guy deteriorated very rapidly in the next couple hours and we made the decision to put him to sleep. We chose Dr Appel to do this and he brought dignity and sensitivity to the situation.

We are more than grateful that Dr. Appel was able to take us in despite him being closed. He heard what happened to my dog and communicated very well about what time to come and gave me a call back when he knew ahead of time that he was running late on his other patient. When we got there, he immediately inspected my dog’s wound and suggested many options to go about my dog’s situation. He was very attentive to everything I was saying and reassured me that my dog is going to be ok. You can tell Dr. Appel is very compassionate and loves what he does.I also appreciate that he took a picture of my dog’s wound before the procedure to show me when I came back. I forgot to ask for the picture then but gave him a call back the next day and he sent it in a swiftly manner. He made sure I understood everything that I need to know when I take my dog home. Your furry friend is in great hands with him, highly recommend!! Thank you Dr. Appel!!

I brought my cat 'Bean' here after he had abruptly stopped eating/drinking. Dr. Appel immediately ordered a series of tests that would rule out some of the more serious illnesses my cat's symptoms aligned with. He had also informed me the severity of my cat's health since he had not eaten/drank anything for the past 2-3 days and was visibly lethargic; I trusted the expertise and agreed to a 3 night hospitalization.Throughout the 3 days, I was given routine updates on my cat's overall health. On the 3rd day, he was discharged and was visibly more energetic and even started eating again! He still has not drank anything, but perhaps that's because he spent the past 3 days hooked up to an IV.Dr. Appel has over 35 years of experience and holds a degree from Cornell. The man lives upstairs and will see your pet at 3 in the morning if it's an emergency. This place is his own private practice, so he's the only doctor on staff; consequently the wait times may be a bit long. His prices are not cheap, but when are hospital bills ever cheap? You can shop around and find that his prices are actually pretty fair when comparing it to other establishments.I understand some people have gotten into verbal altercations with him over payment, but at the end of the day everyone needs to realize that this is still a BUSINESS.

This man should be sued for malpractice. He is so unprofessional. I swear it seems like his certifications are just dissecting animals in his basement. Do not trust this man with your pets. I won't even call him a doctor because he isnt. Dear Roy J Appel I hope all the animals you have killed due to your malpractice come back to haunt you.

Very knowledgeable doctor.Very responsible answersHe saw my cat and told me she had cancer before he even took the x rays.,and when no other vet would give me an immediate appointment. When I called his office I was told that they had no availability but if I would take my cat there and would not mind waiting he would see her. After the x-rays he confirmed it was cancer and explained my options.I am against euthanasia so I took her to specialistsPretty much from the specialists I was told the same thing. If you care about your pet and u can handlethe truth without sugarcoating take your pet there.I am against euthanasia.... and my cat passed when it was timeI wish you all the best for your pet.

The worst service ever. The doctor is an insane butcher, who tried to manipulate to get more money buy suggesting teeth removal for my cat who had current digestion problems just by looking at him. So, I asked to get a blood test first and paid for it but I couldn’t get results for two days until I scheduled an another appointment to outfox them.So I got suspicious and went to a different vet few days later, my cat’s teeth are fine, nothing to remove.By the way three or four people came to pick up their pets ashes while I was waiting in a line.Terrifying how some people try to make you pay for whatever to get more money knowing that you ready to pay any money for the pet you love like your own child.Disgusting.

We never actually got our pets seen at his clinic, but few years back Id like to review one late night phone call Appel answered after our ma gave our kitten, Sandy, a raisin ? from her cereal. I freaked the f out and called the nearest 24h vet. I'd like to attest to Appel's assuring and kind demeanor on the phone call. We'd love to have him as our vet, but parking seems to be a pain and we're coming from Jersey so... ?

i have no words for my experience this man should be shut down. i can see why some gave good reviews because depending on when you go depends on the service. this man is unpredictable unprofessional and disrespectful. he threatened not to see my dog if i kept talking after 3.15 hours of waiting. he didn't sedate my dog cause it was 6pm and would take hours to wake him up. he lied and told me he would sedate first visit. waiting for blood work results and will find another doctor. my poor dog is in pain and issue with the foxtail is not resolved as of yet. shame on him.

The best vet in New York! He has saved our cat's life many times: when he had seizures, a skin infection, and pancreatitis. He knows what he's doing. Dr. Appel is extremely talented and professional. We will pray for long, healthy years for him so that he can continue performing his magic. Matthew says hi to his doctor!

I had an absolutely horrible experience with Roy J Appeal DVM, who is also associated with Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital. In my opinion, they are nothing but scammers who have no clue what they're talking about. To top it off, they charged me a whopping $1000 for essentially doing nothing. When I returned to ask for the medication or a prescription and inquire about where to get it from, they outright refused to help me.To make matters worse, they didn't even bother calling me back when I tried to speak with the doctor. Instead, the doctor himself got in my face, yelled at me, and even threatened to call the police on me. I stood my ground and told him to go ahead and call the cops, as I firmly believed that I had been robbed. Shockingly, he refused to provide me with the medical records for my cat, despite the fact that my cat was still sick after just two weeks, throwing up and clearly in need of emergency care. This blatant refusal to release the paperwork prevented me from taking my cat to another vet promptly. It's abundantly clear that these people have no regard for animals or their well-being. They only care about squeezing as much money out of their clients as possible. They will use and abuse you, all while robbing you of your hard-earned money. I cannot stress enough how strongly I advise against seeking their services. Not only are they disrespectful, but the doctor also stooped to making racist jokes, suggesting that I should "hop on my camel" and go back home. It's absolutely disgusting. In summary, I had an appalling experience with Roy J Appeal DVM and Fifth Avenue Veterinary Hospital. They are nothing more than money-driven individuals who lack compassion and professionalism. I would never recommend their services to anyone.

He’s a one-man-show who dedicates his entire life to helping animals. I don’t feel comfortable taking my pets to anyone else after having him help us. He’s a dedicated, competent, honest and passionate man. The world is lucky to have him and my fiancé and I have the utmost respect for him.

I first met Dr. Appel when my mother and I brought in my mini schnauzer for an emergency visit regarding a tic bite about ten years ago. We chose Dr. Appel again when we made the difficult to decision to put down our then 13.5 year old schnauzer. Our last visit was yesterday with my rabbit Willow who was suffering from gi stasis. The other specialists at AMC that I had seen told me he wouldn’t live if I took him home and insisted on surgery and hospitalization for $8,000. Dr. Appel although doesn’t market himself as an exotics specialist was a hundred times more knowledgeable about Willow’s condition and provided the necessary treatment for a fraction of the cost. I wish I had come to Dr. Appel with Willow sooner. Cannot recommend his services enough. Always kind, compassionate and professional. Thank you Dr. Appel!!!
