I walked into Petco looking for a product and it was difficult to find someone to help, but the cashier, Alex kindly helped me find what I needed for tick prevention for my dog. He was very knowledgeable and informative. Customer service like that makes a difference.

I agree with the last review and want to add that I also felt very uncomfortable and concerned for the well-being of the chickens at the Commack, NY Petco. While the store is generally clean and most animals seem decently cared for, the chickens in particular have been a real concern for me.
Every time I visit, there are dogs barking loudly near their enclosure — sometimes nonstop — and it clearly creates a stressful environment for the birds. It’s upsetting to watch them flinch or huddle from the noise, and I can’t help but feel they’re not being kept in conditions that prioritize their welfare. Chickens are sensitive animals that deserve calm, secure environments — not to be placed in the middle of a high-traffic, noisy retail space.
It’s a tough sight to see, and I hope Petco reevaluates whether this setup is truly in the animals’ best interest.

I’ve visited the Petco in Commack, NY several times for pet supplies. The store is relatively clean, and it appears they take decent care of most of the animals. I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing the chickens during my visit — they’re fun to watch and clearly a draw for customers. That said, I do have mixed feelings about chickens being sold in a big-box retail setting. These animals require proper long-term care and space, and I’m not sure this environment ensures they go to homes prepared for that responsibility.
The larger concern, however, lies in the aquatic section, which consistently shows signs of neglect. On multiple visits, I’ve noticed dead fish in the tanks, including a very concerning case in their “observation tank.” An oranda goldfish that appeared to be treated for ich (ick) was still there a week later — and had died, along with three other fish just days before. That suggests poor water quality and an overall lack of proper care.
I was told someone maintains the tanks daily, but I found a fish that looked like it had been dead for weeks — an inexcusable oversight. This kind of neglect leads to elevated ammonia and nitrite levels, putting all the aquatic life at risk. Sensitive species like orandas require clean, stable environments, and it’s clear that these tanks aren’t providing that. Instead of the fish with ick being taken out of the iso tank after successfully being treated, it was left to deteriorate in worsening conditions.
Petco needs to take a hard look at how aquatic life is managed at this location. Selling fish — and especially sensitive species — comes with a responsibility to provide adequate care. Sadly, that responsibility doesn’t seem to be upheld here.

I placed an order online that said it would be ready in an hour. After 2 hours and no email i decide to drive there. I walk in and there is no one in the registers, i walk towards the back and see one of the workers on his phone. I say excuse me about 3 times before he looks up and proceeds to say he will have someone come up to the resisters. The young lady comes and says that they are working on my order as they speak and how they were having a hard time finding the bag. She leaves me standing there for about 10 mins while helping other people that came AFTER ME ! I walk to the back, grab the bag and come back to the front (had no issue finding it, and i don’t work there). She proceeds to say “you will get an email later but don’t worry you’re good”. Whole time she was ringing up customers she was talking about how there’s not enough people working on a Monday even though there were barely people in the store. I will never go back to this store !

Probably one of the best Petco's on long island, if not the best. Good selection of fish, fish that other Petco's don't typically carry (if you come on a good day). And a decent selection of inventory.
Staff is friendly as well.

I don’t usually leave reviews but this place left such a bad taste in my mouth. I would like to preface that I understand if my concern seems ridiculous or silly to some people, however, regardless of that I did not deserve to be spoken to the way I was by a literal manager of an establishment. Also my review is lengthy for full context.
About a month or so ago, I came into petco to look at the mice and other rodents and when I was an isle over, I watched (assuming) the manager Scott (old man with long gray hair in a ponytail) sell a pet mouse as a feeder mouse to a man. He had it in a box for him in the matter of minutes, with no questions asked, no supplies, etc. that is a very obvious situation. The man even held the box at his hip at the register which was also quite weird but whatever…I wanted to mind my business, but we left after the man and on the way to our car watched the man throw… literally throw, the box w/ the mouse/mice into a bin in the back of his pickup truck, close the bin then close the top of the pickup, and go into Bjs. This was one of our hotter days during our confusing spring transition and the weather on this day was definitely not adequate for leaving a live animal in what is basically a cook box. I also swear I am no PETA activist, I have a reptile of my own, and I am familiar with the circle of life, however that just felt so wrong. I figured I would go back in the store to let the manager know so he could be a little more aware when he is letting anyone buy a live animal from his store.
When I approached Scott, I was more than kind to him explaining the situation, but I already was met with discomfort a result of his facial expressions as I was explaining what had happened and he barely even looked at me. I made it clear I didn’t expect him to do anything about the situation at the moment, bc of course what can you even do at that point... but I was walking on eggshells trying to tell him maybe just be a little more aware when selling animals. I explained to him the man literally tossed a live animal he sold within 5 minutes into the back of his truck and left it to cook in his truck while he went shopping. Scott glanced at me a few times not even pretending to take me seriously. When i finished speaking, his very first words were “what grade are you in” (I’m a college student but why does that matter????) and told me to read some political book that would “teach me a lot about life” and once I saw where this was going I began walking away. Not to overshare, but I have been through quite enough— and as a healthcare worker for children on literally life support, respectfully, I really don’t need life advice from a 65 year old mediocre and likely corrupt petco manager; however I truly did not appreciate how condescending, disgustingly rude he was. All he had to do was say “ok thanks for letting me know” and scoff with your coworkers about how ridiculous it seemed to you afterwards if you have to, at least pretend to care, but instead I was completely talked down to and left so frustrated and confused because I approached the situation as kindly as possible. I’m just confused because is this how he treats every customer or just the younger ones who happen to be women ?? Because ngl, this is the typical attitude that comes with being a young woman approaching an older man with any type of concern, which was also why I was hesitant to say something in the first place. I guess he proved me right and then some. Nobody deserves that treatment especially when I’m just a customer with a concern, I will absolutely never return here because of how gross Scott was to me for literally no reason.
