I don't know what all the whining is about - when I go into a bookstore if the proprietor is friendly and chatty I can't look at books! The people who work here are nice enough and VERY knowledgeable if you have questions which is probably the most important thing, no? Well actually the most important thing is the books - and the books are AMAZING. Seem pretty fairly priced too, with some real gems. If you're in East Hampton and you like art and books this place is not to be missed.

I'd give this place 5 stars if only the guy who owned it was cooler. He could be so much cooler and less dick-ish. And if he were, then oh man this would be the coolest place to hang out in east Hampton. But a dick is a dick is a douche. And when you got a dick with a bad vibe running the place, the last thing you want to do is purchase anything from him. Pity. Now if I were the Dick, I'd say to myself, "Dick your talents aren't dealing with clients. Your talents are more academic. Or perhaps you have a good eye. Or are good with money. Stick with what you're good at. And hire some lovely charming fun person to be client facing. And stay in your office Dick. And watch your business grow."

While there might be good and interesting content to see here, it is ruined by the offputting demeanor of the owner, Harper. Consider yourself lucky if he so much as glances up from his ever-present phone and gives you an up-and-down glance before muttering an uninterested "Hi." It seems that we have a social climber on our hands; for he seemingly only has time for those he considers important, i.e. those with money or a reputation. A rude way to treat potential customers and art enthusiasts, indeed!

This is strictly a review for ordering online, since I haven't yet had an opportunity to visit the store - although after reading Brad P's terrific review, I certainly hope to get out there someday. I wanted to buy a limited-edition publication and I did a web search for sellers. Harper's Books was one of the very few booksellers with a copy, and their price was also the most reasonable (admittedly that was probably because the few other sellers had signed copies). I e-mailed the bookstore and received a response within literally about a minute. There were several e-mails back-and-forth re: certain details - and Chris (the co-director) was exceptionally responsive, accommodating & pleasant. The photos alone make the store look lovely and the service was superb!
