Fascinating history museum with amazing tours that demonstrate a lot of the old machinery. Super cool preserved mill machines and turbines, I felt transported back in time.

Unfortunately this place was closed when we got there as it doesn't open until May like a lot of stuff up in the Catskills. I was angry because I looked online and there was no indication that it wasn't open yet. I give it 3 stars because it looks pretty coolFrom the outside and the river nearby offered a great distraction for my kids to check out. Hopefully we will be back and get to actually do the tour one day.

I have been coming here since I was a kid when my grandmother lived around the corner. My brothers and I played in the creek and bought huge jawbreakers in the gift shop. I took my daughter for a tour and we were treated like family. Everyone was so friendly and explained how the mill worked to my 7 year old. We will be back!

Ice harvest festival day. Old ways to harvest ice: cutting, retrieving from mill pond, hauling to and storing in ice house, and using on July 4th to make homemade ice cream the old way. Lots of activities for kids. Horse drawn sleigh sleigh rides. Food, drinks, ice fishing. Ice was about 12-14 inches thick.

We went to the ice harvest and it was super cool to see. Lots of tools of the trade on display and some video of how it was done in times past. It was a really cool way to spend a cold day.

Love this place! Been going here periodically since late 90s, & most recently last wk for their yearly Ice Festival. Wholesome "family" fun that's great for the kiddies & everyone else. Altho the festival is well organized w/tours throughout the yr, you can do "self-guided" tours & just wander around the buildings & property. From the sawmill (in summer we watched the lumber being cut/processed), to its amazing waterwheel & all the complex workings that once powered entire mill - a thrill to see it run! There are several other bldgs to explore and all have helpful plaques to explain history & usages if you're not w/a guide. The staff is always super friendly and helpful as well. Top notch!

A wonderful place to explore the connection between water power, milling and local history. Hanford Mills not only preserves the mill, but the lifestyle that went along with it. There are cooking demonstrations in the old house, ice cutting in the winter and home made ice cream in the summer. A great place to visit with family and friends. Something for all ages and backgrounds.
