I have been craving nam khao tod since living in Europe where SE Asian food is fairly basic. This did not disappoint! They made it spicy as I requested and gave me more herbs/lettuce for free when I'd run out! Note it's cash only.

This has been my go to Thai spot for years. It’s a really small restaurant and fits around 15 or so diners, so if you come for dinner you may need to wait for your seat. Pro tip - go for lunch or early dinner. My family and I recently dined here on a weeknight and got there around 6pm. By the time we were leaving, the place was packed. My favorite thing to order is their Pla Pao set ($60) - which includes their grilled fish, choice of papaya salad, and another side. I always get their regular Tum Thai papaya salad, and customize it to extra sour, less sugar, and 3 chilis. Another pro tip - every restaurant has their own scale of mild, medium, spicy hot so just tell them exact number of chili! Hug Esan is the probably only restaurant I can think about that is able to make papaya salad to my taste. The fish obviously is the star of the show - very fresh, perfectly cooked and flaky. I love eating it with their tangy red-orange sauce. We also ordered their Gai Yang - recently it isn’t as good as I remembered and price was increased to $18.Spring rolls is always a hit here - it comes with a sweet sauce and a side of lettuce, mint, and cilantro to wrap it up for a healthy twist. They also cut it up into bite size pieces so it’s easily shareable in a group.Cash only establishment!

Food are extremely delicious and authentic flavors however the atmosphere and space is extremely tiny; it’s very small space inside to the point you’ll elbow to elbow with other customers beside you.

Was visiting son in downtown Manhattan, took a half hour subway because he read this was the best Thai food. Did not disappoint. Brought my own wine.

Living near this hidden gem made me procrastinate coming here, but it was so worth! If you want to try dishes that are not your typical thai food, this is a place to go.Esan is from Northern Thailand, and they have dishes where the proteins would be eaten with sticky rice. I got Gai Yang and they tell you step by step how to eat it. You roll the rice and cut a piece of the meat, and dip it in the fish sauce. The pungent fish sauce was infiltrated with different herbs, so that the chicken would not be too dry.The small restaurant makes it so cozy and makes me want to come again. Even if you aren't from Queens, it is worth the trip!

Was really looking forward to this meal...The food wasn't terrible, but the star of the show for me which was supposed to be the crispy pork belly, was really over cooked and hard. I also didn't realize that the pork belly would be breaded and then fried? Other places had relied on crisping the actual skin of pork belly...Unfortunately won't be returning. Leaving a good star review as I'm not trying to hurt the business.

Hug esan specializes dishes from Isan in Thailand. Every dish was phenomenal. Would return for the tilapia.

My first two orders from Hug Esan were mind blowing. I mean .. mind blowing... the heat level is superb if you like heat. I usally order Thai Spicy and it is way too spicy for me. I stick to Spicy.Their beef salad which is sliced rib eye with rice powder, red onions etc is amazing.Pad Thai as boring as can be, Hug Esan not only gives you a massive amount but some of the best ever and I get it, because I need something to help quell the burn. It's the only non-spicy item I get. This place is one of the best Thai places in the USA.

Ate here today for lunch with my sister and 2 cousins. We had tried, brought and ate different types of dishes together. It was really good and delicious. The service there was also fast, quick and attentive that we didn't feel rushed about what to choose a dish to try for the first time. I couldn't agree more. Finally, I would definitely eat and come back again next time! :)

A friend brought me here on my most recent visit to NYC last month, and I have been dreaming of our meal ever since because we don't have this regional cuisine in SF. We had the dill soup, papaya salad (the spiciest dish on our table!), mee ka ti, and something else that escapes me since it's been almost a month. Everything was so good!
