On 2/25/2025 I had an appoint to get my passport at the Lake Placid post office. There an employee, who’s name I didn’t catch unfortunately (long grey hair and a facial piercing) made disparaging racial comments in front of me and my young daughter. She said “If they can’t speak English they shouldn’t be here”. Lake placid is a tourist town that depends on tourism money as well as our foreign workers. What she said was completely vile, racist, and inappropriate.

I live in LP and receive bad service from my letter carrier. He leaves mail in the wrong boxes or places it in a plastic bin that the landlord has placed under the mailboxes, where the mail gets piled in a generic mess of junk mail and personal mail, often never reaching it's intended recipient. Complaints to the PO are met with eye rolls and obfuscation. Perhaps I live in the wrong building, a building of working class hotel employees. Everyone knows that LP is a playground for the rich and that those of average means who live here are their slaves. It seems that the Lake Placid PO shares that value.

Postcard stamps at last, thank you USPS. The clerk had them in her tray and now I can send the postcards that I purchased at the Olympic Museum. Yay!
A classic post office that has surely been here for decades. Post office boxes, supplies, and everything you need to send things through the mail.

I walked in to the Lake Placid postal office to pick up a package today with my two year old son. I am here visiting, but this employee must have decided to treat me like a tourist (pretty sure you should treat everyone the same, but here I am writing this). My mom grew up here, my grandparents were locals their whole lives and we still have family in the area. I grew up coming to LP my whole life and it feels like my second hometown.I said to the middle-aged lady with the lip stud behind the counter, “Hello, I’m here to pick up a package.” The lady acted as if I had wronged her and her entire family. She looked me in the eye, slowly folded her hands on the counter, and said very slowly, verbatim: “Well now, let’s see. I don’t know you. And you don’t know me. So I will need your name and address.” with such attitude that I was shocked. Like her, I took my time in responding and said “Wow. I’m sorry, but why did you have to say that like that?” She said bluntly, “I don’t know who you are.” Of course I didn’t expect her to know who I was. I didn’t know her and I didn’t expect her to read my mind. I told her my name and address. She went and found the package. I said, “How kind of you.” She said “Have a nice day.”If it was humor, it didn’t read. It left me with a horrible taste in my mouth. I had come in a few days earlier also looking for a package and she was there and wasn’t that rude. She must have had an off day. But regardless, be nice. Don’t treat people that way, no matter how they look (local or not, white or brown, rich or poor). I hope the USPS addresses this employee for her unpleasant and unwarranted attitude.

Having lived in Lake Placid for 8 years, I pass by the Post Office a couple of times every day. For a small village, the Post Office does a suprisingly amount of volume. I usually utilize various services on a weekly basis. The staff is always friendly, professional and efficient. Shopping online is important in Lake Placid because the village doesnt have the population to support most stores and services. Ordering items weekly, my experience with the Post Office delivery couldnt be better. Thank you Lake Placid Post Office for being reliable and doing a superior job.
