NOTE: A lot of these five star reviews are for the beach, not for Skudin. I second the recommendation to avoid the camp or mixed group sessions if you are an adult and instead go for private lessons. I signed up for a week of camp, which is an adults only group but mixed in with kid groups. The instruction for the adults is non existent. Next to no instruction, on land or out in the water, nobody will tell you what you're doing wrong or how to do it better. The instructor actually didn't even ask our names before getting in the water. The first day there seemed to be a lot of confusion among the instructors. Each day started ~30 min late as well and the single break is poorly timed and not used well (You can teach while people eat a snack!). We practiced pop-ups 2-3 times (no explanation or instructions), had about a 45 second demo of how to stay safe, and that was it. I caught an average of 3 WAVES PER HOUR. It's fine if you already know how to pop up and you just don't have a board or know how to get out there on your own. It would have been a MUCH better use of my money to take that $600 and apply it towards sessions at the wave pool instead. Incredibly disappointing. They do take safety pretty seriously and err on the side of caution so at least I felt like I wasn't in unsafe conditions. But it's not worth $600, not by a long shot.

I visited this location in May of 1991, but I don't know if these are the same proprietors. It was my first trip to the east coast, and being a native Californian, the place was exactly like a surf shop in my home state, except for the accents of the store staff; it took me a couple of seconds to orient myself! :-)

On our trip to Long Island (from Western NY) we decided to sign up our grandson (9 1/2 years old) for surf camp. We were hoping for a good experience (Jacob had never surfed before) and wound up with a great one. So MUCH more than we expected. I was hoping for a few instructors basically keeping tabs on the kids and turns out the students were never more than 5-10 feet from the instructors. Each and every one instructive and supportive. Simply a great experience. We will be back next year

We had a surf lesson yesterday, our instructor was Dan. it was awesome! Dan was careful to go over safety and a few basics before we got in the water. in the water Dan was great at putting us on waves. We both did really well and had tons of fun. Dan gave really good pointers after watching us surf and wipe out haha. The overall operation of the surf school is very organized and all the staff were really nice. A great experience!

Took surf lessons, it was our first time surfing and our instructor was super helpful in showing us the basics. It was a lot of fun, more challenging than we expected, towards the end our instructor convinced us to do one last run and guided us out thru the waves to make it easier to catch a wave. Super friendly, super knowledgable, would def book a lesson again!!

Our oldest child (11 years old) was super hesitant after a previous experience that didn't work for him. They are amazing, professional and awesome. Can't recommend enough!

I did the fall surf camp the past two days and it was awesome . The staff was accommodating, patient, enthusiastic and helpful. On the second day I was able to stand on the board with the help of Leslie and crew. Highly recommend

Instructor Eric was great. No complaints about him. Poorly run business though. I arrived ten minutes early for my lesson. I get to the boardwalk to check in and pay my balance. The kid there sends me down to the beach. So I go back down to the beach, run and throw my beach pass with my chair and walk to the skudin tent on the beach. It's now 1:00. My lesson is supposed to start. I get to the tent, the girl at the tent then tells me I have to go BACK UP to the boardwalk to pay. I told her, I was just there.... they sent me here. She makes a call on her cell phone to see if I can just pay after my lesson. They tell her no. So I'm sent up to the boardwalk AGAIN. But I have to grab my beach pass to get back on the beach!!! I go up to the boardwalk- the kid points to "the office" I walk inside and see no office. No one is in there. Finally someone comes out from a door. I told her my surf lesson has started and I need to pay. At this point I'm getting angry because it's cutting into my lesson but I'm remaining calm because I wanted my first experience surfing to be pleasant. Of course her credit card reader isn't working. Finally works- I go BACK to the beach AGAIN. Put my beach pass with my things AGAIN!!! Finally get to start my surf lesson at 1:20, missed 20 minutes of my lesson because of it poorly ran business and was not happy at all. I was in a bad mood but my surf instructors good vibes made me forget about it. We had a great time and I got up on the board a few times. Thinking back today though I am upset that I missed out on a good portion of my lesson. 20 min is a lot when your paying $100 for 75 min. If you're going to hire teenagers to run your stand make sure there is an adult overseeing them.

I don't normally write reviews but in this case i just had to do it.My daughter, her cousin and friend all did a week of surf camp July 19th thru the 23rd at Nickerson beach. I was very nervous about the kids being 1st time surfers and not the strongest of swimmers. Well let me tell you the camp was AWESOME from beginning to end. Every child got signed in and out even if you stayed on the beach the girls tracked down every parent for signatures. I didn't run across even one staff member that was FRIENDLY, KNOWLEDGEABLE & POSITIVE.The staff was constantly supportive in their instruction and praise. Although this week had very little "surf" it didn't stop them from teaching and riding even the smallest waves. One day it rained for about 30 min. Instead of packing it in they cheered and got the kids psyched to ride in the rain. I highly recommend this camp to any parent who has a child that wants to surf at any level. This week was a great experience and the entire SKUDIN FAMILY is PHENOMANAL !!! Looking forward to next year.Laura Dolan-Kayserilioglu
