On a recommendation, we elected to hire Patrick to prepare our taxes for the 2020 fiscal year. Our former accountant who we had used for years had retired. At first, Patrick sounded professional and seemed willing to welcome new clients who would have provided him with years of business. When an IRS "e-file rejection" was flagged on our account, because someone apparently filed my son's social security number as a dependent on their taxes; things went south.Patrick had advised us to file a paper return with the IRS, and the matter would be resolved but it will "take forever". It took Patrick a week to send us the form, but when we received it, we filed immediately. My wife and I waited three months, with nothing said about the status of our refund. Nothing appeared on the IRS website indicating a process was in place, we were unable to schedule an appointment, and each time we tried to call the phone service, we would get cut off or no one answered.I reached out to Patrick by phone and email, and he refused to return any communications. I was trying to ask him to either reach out to IRS to see if he could get a status for us, or just call back to reassure us this was standard practice. It seemed that once he was paid, he had no use for us.Finally one night, yes on a Saturday, I tried to call Patrick again, since he never responded during business hours. He ghosted me again, but when my wife called on her phone, he answered immediately, not even attempting to hide his disgust for reaching out to him. He became very angry and belligerent when we were attempting to find out when we might see our $4,100 refund. Finally a couple of weeks later, the deposit was made and the matter was resolved.Since we were unhappy with Patrick's unprofessional behavior and lack of response, I advised him by email we would not be using his services in the future. Once I informed him of this, he felt this would finally be the time to respond.. He accused I was angry at him because of the IRS glitch, but it was simply because of his unwillingness to return calls and emails. This escalated in to a series of emails back and forth with anger-filled misspelled rants from him. I'll share some of what he said:"I guess your blaming me that your return was rejected do to the use of your son’s social security number already being used.""... you called me on a Saturday evening which is ridiculous. You battered me with calls one after another and then you would have your wife do the same. Sorry you are not my only account..""I have been in business for a very long time and all my clients are all long term clients and never a problem." (This was not true. In fact he told us on the phone call he had lost a client over the same issue.)"....when a client like you acts like this it does irritate me..""You are a first time client and a problem.."" I am wasting my time and energy with you and its not worth it."These are not the statements of a professional. People need to know what they are getting when they seek the services of an accountant, and now those reading this should consider themselves warned.

RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!! We hired Patrick to prepare our taxes on the advice of someone close. In the beginning he seemed competent and acted professionally as he worked on mine and my wife's joint return. Once we submitted payment of $275, it was all down hill. After couple of weeks Patrick informed us that our IRS e-file was rejected because someone had claimed my son's social security number as a dependent. He advised us that we'd need to file a paper return, but it will take "forever" for the matter to be resolved. After 6 days of not hearing from Patrick or receiving the form, I emailed asking when we might receive it. He'd mentioned it was mailed and on its way. We immediately completed the necessary information once the form arrived. We waited 3 MONTHS with no activity on our return. I tried going on the IRS website to attempt to schedule an appointment with the local office to resolve the matter. The IRS recorded messages did not allow for me to speak with a human, so I'd hoped our hired accountant could help. I tried to reach out to Patrick and ask him to see if there was a way to follow up. He ignored at least 2 emails and 2 phone calls. All he had to do was get back to me and mention that this length of time was typical, or make an inquiry. One evening, yes it was a Saturday, I tried calling again, and he ducked the call, but when my wife called on her phone less than a minute later, he answered obviously agitated when he realized it was us. My wife made the same request to follow up, in which he kept saying, "There's nothing I can do...There's nothing I can do..." She requested he call us at another time and he never did. He'd also mentioned that he's lost a client because they were in a similar situation as ours's but somehow I feel there was more to it. Finally today, 7/16/21 the refund was deposited into our account. Not only was it deposited, but there was a $29 error in our favor! Once I was assured payment was received the following email chain occurred: ME: Good morning Pat, As of today, 7/16/21, we received the deposit of our IRS refund. Thank you for preparing our taxes this year. Next year we will seek these services elsewhere. PAT: Ok no problem. I guess your blaming me that your return was rejected do to the use of your son's social security number already being used. Pat ME: No, just for not responding to calls and emails PAT: Well I told up front it was going to take time. The fee I charged you was for the preparation of your tax return not to solve issue with the social security number being used on another person's return. Plus you called me on a Saturday evening which is ridiculous. You battered me with calls one after another and then you would have your wife do the same. Sorry you are not my only account. I went over and above what I was hired to do. Good luck with your new preparer. It's obvious there's something a bit off with this person's temperament. If he's anxious about not earning $275 next year, can you imagine how upset he'd be not receiving the $4,100 that was due us? In any case, it's time to move on.
