The little "cafe" that they have on the premises is named "SEXY SALAD CAFE"! There are signs throughout the park with the word "SEXY" and every item you buy in the cafe has it written on the packages. Nothing about an arboretum is sexual and people bring their children here. I would be fuming if my 7 year old started using the word SEXY. Cannot believe a state park would allow such an unnecessary and unrelated theme for a cafe that I could instantly come up with infinite better suited names for. I refused to buy anything because I'm sick and tired of the new agenda where we sexualize literally everything especially when it is anywhere near being involved with children. It's weird and gross and I'm not coming back here anymore. Shame on you New York State Park Association.

The Planting Fields has a very nice scenery to take a significant other or the family to view the many florals they have during the spring and summer. The grounds also has a few greenhouses they have some plants that are tropical that need warmer temperatures to thrive. It's also a very popular place where people get their photos taken, but a permit is required for professional photography. Permits cost currently at $100 which is a bit high. There is a parking fee of $8 unless you have an Empire Pass which does cover the fee that it is a State Park. You can rent the Empire Pass from your local library if it is available. Parking close to the entrance can be full at times, so you may have to park your car in the additional parking area. For an additional fee, you can choose to pay to see the mansion on site, Coe Hall. That is where the family who used to take care of the property lived. There is a large area of grounds you can walk around with the family. They do warn visitors to check for ticks since the area does have deer that roam the property. Overall it is a nice place to visit, but it can be busy at times depending if there are special events going on.

Today I visited the Planting Fields Arboretum for the Long Island Orchid Society show! I've been to this beautiful space several times in the past, but not in the past decade. So I was very excited to see all my favorite flowers in one place, so many unbelievably gorgeous varieties and representations of orchids!!Once the show was over, we walked the grounds to the greenhouse, undoubtably one of my favorite places on Long Island. One step inside and you're in the middle of a warm, comfortable natural smelling wonderland. There are rooms of cactus, orchids, bromeliads, and the main attraction: the central greenhouse. I spotted banana and my "come-back" plant, and so many beautiful living things. Honestly I didn't want to leave, but I foolishly forgot to bring a water bottle. The orchid show ends tomorrow, but the Arboretum is open every day. When (not if) you go, please say hello to the plants for me--they'll enjoy your carbon dioxide!

I wanted to tour Coe Hall, but unfortunately you have to pay $8 to park on top of the cost of tickets, as most people visit for the garden or other amenities. I thought since it was not a big popular site (like the Theodore Roosevelt House) it would be easy to get tickets, but each tour group is very small. When I called, I couldn't get anyone on the phone, and in person the next available tour wasn't for 2 hours, and they made reservations via post it notes. The way to get tickets was very low tech. Also they have a "visitors pavilion" that seemed mostly abandoned (maybe for events only) but the place to buy tickets was at the gift shop, which wasn't clear. Everything at the gift shop was just generic candles and books, nothing with "Coe Hall" or "Planting Fields" on it. It's reasonable to expect some souvenirs at a gift shop.Hassles aside, the property is beautiful and extensive with different gardens and lot s of places to sit on a bench or bring your own blanket for a picnic. For the house itself, it's really unique to see a Tudoresque-style house. Inside, it's a great decor collection, and the guide was very informative about William Coe and his family. The history was really interesting, and it was worth it. I recommend signing up for the tour online in advance to get a spot.On a nice day, the house and the gardens made for a fun day.

This lovely place has changed alot in way being managed unfortunately. a 5 is not a 3 sadly. Many are complaining but little being done The last few years they are hiring people who either have a pretentious air about them that is so haughty you would think they are related to the Coe's - or do not have the people skills and passion for this place that the previous care takers, volunteers and employees did. You have very young college age people hired who act as tho you are troubling them when you ask simple questions at the new office set up in Coe Hall or are part of the landscaping staff. My comment is not about age but somehow the older volunteers and employees who were part of this community had a passion and love for this place that seems to have been lost by the newer staff. Coe Hall is never open anymore so when you plan an outing with friends for instance, will need to make it on a weekend as they will close the place up without any notification. The cafe is non existent but that makes sense as I dont think they get enough traffic to keep an entire cafe making a profit. If you have disabilties or have service dog dont even think about it. Especially if you have a service dog as I saw two members of the landscaping team put an elderly woman into tears over her small dog of about 3-4 pounds she was carrying. She kept trying to give them paperwork and they would not even look at it. I understand there are people who abuse the grounds and having dogs would possibly create filth when people dont pick up after their dogs. it was not the message but how they treated her which left a very poor impression on me. She was quite old and deserved to be treated with respect. her hands were shaking from either her age/affliction or way she was being treated. The only place where the staff are still lovely is the greenhouse as somehow they still maintain the spirit of this place that seems to have been lost these last few years.Used to be a place that felt like home for my family who lived a few blocks over in Mill Neck and has were supporting members. People, including staff, would wave to one another and membership events were filled with people who appreciated the beauty and history of the place. Alot has changed to say the least and few for the better. My suggestion is to enjoy the place but not bother with the membership fees and employees as dealing with some of the newer staff will leave a bad taste in your mouth that will impact the experience. If you have a service animal or are disabled, stay far away though as nothing good will come of it

Just for a small price for parking, you get to experience a unique space that was built with great care. We have visited the Planting Fields Foundation multiple times, we walk to different parts of the property and always make new discoveries. To say that this area is a hidden gem is an understatement

For my 1,500th review, I saved THIS place for that honor. What a BEAUTIFUL area of Long Island, but then, I love EVERYTHING about the North Shore, well, except maybe not the traffic, but visually speaking, I'm always blown away by the beauty. The grounds at Planting Fields are beautiful and extremely spacious. Every season has something different blooming, and there is an unbelievable greenhouse to view. There are buildings to walk through, like Coe Hall, but for some reason, it was closed when we went in early Spring. Not sure why, but at least we got to view the greenhouse. It was incredible.
