If I could give minus stars I would … Having been an experienced dog owner and trainer, I am absolutely appalled by the way I was spoken to and patronized this evening. I was accused of encouraging a dog to bite when all the puppy was doing was trying to show affection in the only way it knows how to after being caged and un loved from birth. I have trained and worked with mountain rescue dogs, working farm dogs and this evening I was told, I was unable to control a puppy. A manger with an ego to feed at the expense of those babies looking for loving homes who doesn’t have clue what she is talking about. How sad that now I will go to a breeder when the shelter was so full of babies looking for homes. I will never step foot in this place nor recommend to anyone. I will not stop until I get the name of this manager and take it as far as I can because I owe this to the dogs in that shelter ..

The new cat and kitten floor is amazing. Different rooms sponsored by amazing people from Billy Joel, Rachael Ray, hallmark channel, and others. So many kitties need love there.First floor completely dedicated to dogs and puppies. Again so many need homes and love also.Great people helping and giving time, love, education and support.

If you have good intentions of adapting a dog, do not come to this place because at this place people who make decisions regarding adaption approval think they know everything but in reality they are not that knowledgeable. My two sons, 14 and 10 years old and my wife fell in love with a poppy dog and we were so excited but then approval process started. We had 2 dogs in the past, one passed away in 2019, another one stayed with us for 2 years before we realized that she needed a companion, so, we found a place for her in Massachusetts where the owners had another dog of the same breed. We drove her there and soon realized that it was the best choice for our Roxy. We honestly mentioned that Roxy had separation anxiety and we could not leave her home alone. After a total of four hours we spent at this place waiting for approval we were told that since both me and my wife are working from home any poppy we get would develop separation anxiety and as a result we are not qualified to get a poppy but only dog older than 9 months. We always worked from home and our first pug never had any problems but some manager (who refused to talk directly with us) at North Shore Animal League in Port Washington had a strong opinion that any poppy dog would develop separation anxiety because somebody always is at home. My advise for dog lovers is to avoid this place ang adapt a dog from any other shelters.

Quite frankly disgusting treatment. As a proud dog owner for the last 15 years and unfortunately passed away and finally decided we’re ready for adoption. To be denied because the potential adopted dog would have access to a yard, and they could not find all vaccination records for a dog that passed away. Complete waste of two hours. But was basically told that if I lied on the application, I wouldn’t be denied.

We adopted our pet here! It was an overall positive experience. Our dog is lovely. He is a rescue from Louisiana. We got him as a puppy. He's a sweet and loving dog and always gets us out of the house, which is great. Perfect dog for hiking, the beach or nature at large. Lovely camping companion too. Excellent with kids. Playful and friendly with other dogs. Friendly with all people. We did invest a lot in socializing him. I wish I had not been mislead about the insurance Fetch offered at North Shore. They said it will not go up and that's it's the best price on the market. Wrong! It was a premium price and it keeps going up all the time. So do not trust the reps there when you adopt. Do your own research and get what they say in writing so they can't do an about face.

I'm so disappointed. I found the two most beautiful angora cats and I wanted them so so badly, I'm a veterinary technician and they didn't even let me sign papers all because I lived on a military base. These cats would've had the best life with the best care. I'm so so upset walking out with nothing. I was willing to take a pair when most people don't. Crazy. I'm crushed.

They really need to rethink the process on how they handle adoption. To allow families to meet and greet every animal in the shelter, meet and fall in love with the one that they chose, only then to be denied adoption by their complicated and invasive application process is unnecessarily Heartbreaking. They made me feel bad about myself and my life choices. It was like suffering, a small death in the family. I had memories of the cats I chose, but I had no cats.

Everyone should believe all of the extensive one star reviews on here. Following our really nasty and unfortunate situation there yesterday, I read through all of the reviews and can confirm that they are absolutely true. We had a nearly identical experience as many of you. We are lifelong cat owners. Our previous two cats (brothers) came from North Shore Animal League and lived to be 14 and 16 years old. It has been some time since they passed and we figured it was about time to bring some new kittens to the family. We spent a long time looking through the various rooms with a nice older woman guiding us. After looking at many adorable cats and kittens, we were introduced to a big, fluffy grey cat and his black short haired brother. It was love at first sight. They were 7 months old, a bit older than what we were looking for, but they were so awesome, we didn't care. Our minds made up, we were given the notorious application, longer than War and Peace, invasive (why do they need the name address and phone number of my employer?) and designed to trip you up. As one person on here correctly stated, the application is a trap. But we filled it out as required. One of the questions on the application is whether your previous cats were allowed outside. We have a large backyard with a deck and we let them go in the yard and on the deck occasionally, so we answered the question yes. Once the application was completed, the interrogation began. A woman grabbed it and asked us all sorts of questions about every single one of our answers. She then said she was going to check our three references and that it would take an hour and we could not remain in the lobby area while they did so. We went and walked around and an hour later the phone rings and they tell us they need more references. What???? We went back to the lobby to find out why. They told us that the references we provided were not familiar enough with our past "cat history" to qualify as valid. Completely unbelievable. We gave references of people who know our character and integrity and know we have had cats in the past. Whatever. We gave them another reference. Then we were told to leave and they would call us in a half hour. We went to look at the dogs in the meantime. All the adult dogs looked pathetically sad, and some looked very ill. One had crapped all over his cage to the point he had nowhere to sit. The phone rings. Four and a half hours in total after we arrived. The interrogator told us we were rejected because we had let our cats outside in the past. WHAT?????????????? Please remember- that information was on our application the entire time. They knew this BEFORE they called our three references and BEFORE they asked for a fourth reference. If they were going to reject us because our cats went outside a few times, they could have done it at the time they were interrogating us about the application and not wasted another 90 minutes of our time. By the way, we are a gay couple and I was getting some vibes from them the whole time, so I don't know if the reason they gave us for the rejection is true or not. The way they went about it, it sure doesn't seem that way, and having read other reviews on here where minorities felt discriminated against, I think it is entirely possible that they just didn't feel like adopting to the gays. Who knows, but these idiots just denied two cats a wonderful life where they would have been loved and spoiled endlessly. Outrageous, offensive, and despicable. Adopt elsewhere. This place is truly the worst.
