for the newark airport location: thats funny that they don't even have their location on this app. do not go here! i told the woman at the counter i had insurance & she told me i had to buy liability or i would not get the car! i had a very important appointment to attend & was forced to buy extra liability when i already bought the coverage! she didnt even bother look when i showed her the information. she just responded with "no it doesn't" in a snark tone. absolute terrible service! do not use thrifty! go to alamo! they don't trick you!

No cars available even though I had a reservation. Never using Thrifty again!

There are no clear instructions on how to return your rental at la guardia. we drove around for an HOUR trying to find where to go. we had a very early flight but customer service and the actual rental location didn't open until 6am. What are you supposed to do if your flight leaves at 5am??? if you call all you get is a message that says they're closed. the website doesn't say anything but gives you the pickup address that doesn't open til 6am. The location has no information but there was a small sign that says after hours returns - guess where they said to proceed? Hertz. How were you supposed to know to return to a different company!? And they didn't open til 6 either!! Someone suggested drive to marine terminal and no one knew how to return it. This has to be a constant issue because no one knew where to direct us. We were forced to wait until 6am even though our flight starts boarding at 6:55. When we told them how much of a hassle it was they weren't apologetic but said we could have dropped it off at marine terminal, which we tried and no one knew a thing. Can you drop your car off, take the shuttle to transfer to a bus to the actual airport, check your bags, go through tsa, find your gate and board in 45 minutes????? nope. we missed our flight!

Extremely misleading!!! I was given misinformation about EVERYTHING even when I tried to be diligent and ask a lot of questions so I wouldn't be paying for extra things I did not need. I asked what the best way to do the gas was, they said through them its competitive price and you pay for what you use. that was a lie, they charged about $.50 more a gallon then all the local gas stations AND charged me for a full tank when I only used a half tank and returned it half full. On top of that they will charge $15 per toll, even on a $2 toll. I used a $2 toll and a $6 toll, their "administrative fee" for that is $30. Absolutely ridiculous! I am very disappointed with the service, I will never use them again.

I regret betraying Hertz. Rude customer service is one thing. Bare bones rentals? Also totally cool when you know what you're getting into. But unsafe rental cars? That's a whole other story. And unfortunately, that's the case with this Thrifty location. I picked up a cheap little Chevy for a six-day rental, driving to Chicago and back. It wasn't anywhere near clean, but I shrugged it off. I wiped things down with my own Clorox wipes, and they came up black. But not even an hour into my drive, warning lights starting coming on on the dash. Then, in the midst of fog and rain, I discovered the windshield wipers didn't work; they weren't just old but they made a thumping noise when they tried to move across the windshield, effectively getting zero rain off. When I called customer service (while driving with maybe 3 feet of visibility), I was told all the Thrifty locations were closed for the evening. I had no choice but to continue. And that's when the mechanical issues started! When I'd turn off or restart the car, it sometimes wouldn't turn off or on. It would flash "no key in vehicle" when the key was most certainly in the vehicle. All-in-all, this thrifty provided a very unsafe car rental experience and I would urge anyone who values their life to not rent from this location. Best of all, when I returned the vehicle (after swapping out at a different location), and tried to tell them what happened, they couldn't have cared less and literally walked away mid- me explaining. Hertz, I love you and I'll never betray you again!

RENTERS BEWARE!! I pre-paid a three day car rental from this Thrifty Rent A Car location in August 2021. I was a groomsman in a friend's wedding in L.I. Since the event was local (I was traveling from Brooklyn), I didn't opt in for toll option. Everything went as scheduled, dropped car off with no incident. In October, I get hit with $75 in toll charges on my credit card!! I knew these were bogus so I disputed charges with my credit card company who credited amounts back. Fast forward to February 2022, Thrifty sent a claim to a debt collector for $90!! I'm so furious, I'm beside myself!! Definitely disputing this claim! I've been renting cars for years and never experienced such gross overcharges and obvious fraud! A quick google search shows these companies have been getting away with these fraudulent toll charges for awhile. They're either incompetent or crooked, either way, it's time to buy a car!

Rented a Car today from Thrifty and had a good experience. Contrary to most of the reviews there wasn't a wait and Mary was very helpful. The building is interesting but the car runs good and was way less expensive than the rest of the rental companies. Hopefully a good sign for them.

It has a bad wrap and it's no frills but I've been fortunate. I find that if I'm patient and personable it helps to navigate the counter. They deal with lots of cranky tourists confused and looking for quick connections to their NYC destinations, it just happens to be my neighborhood car rental place. All cars I've rented have been clean, in good condition and I've had 0 issues. I'd recommend getting the easy pass thingy if your leaving NYC- tolls are everywhere!

Have been renting cars for over 30 years. This was, without exaggeration, my worst rental car experience ever. First, and this is on LGA, we had to take an inter-terminal shuttle to catch the rental car shuttle. Added 30 mins to our airport experience. Shuttle then takes us off-site to what can only be described as an abandoned chop shop where someone has definitely been executed by the mob. Line was 20 people deep and there were 3 agents milling about with only one helping a customer at any given time. Took us 90 minutes to get through the line. Ridiculous. Not worth the minor "savings" we received by pre-paying. Avoid at all costs.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Everyone who works here are crooks. From those who work the counter to customer service. They gave us a faulty car that had THREE flat tires. About 4-5 hours into our trip our low tire pressure went off. After spending hours with customer service and roadside assistance they were ABSOLUTELY NO HELP. My family and I had to sleep in a car for 7 HOURS! Thrifty left us completely stranded. Horrible experience. Don't ever rent from them. EVER EVER EVER. We got no compensation and not even a sorry. It's not worth it. For your family's safety, do not rent from them.

My experience at LGA Thrifty was probably the worst car rental experience I've ever had, and that is really saying something. I booked a rental car through Thrifty because it was the cheapest option by a non negligible amount, but after that godawful experience, I realize that paying more to avoid it would have been well worth it. After we arrived at LGA, we headed out to get the shuttle to the rental car pickup location. Three Alamo/Enterprise shuttle buses had come to pick up before the Thrifty/Dollar shuttle arrived. And when it did arrive, it did not come to the shuttle stop that was clearly labeled with "Thrifty." Instead, we and other panicked passengers had to run across the street to make sure we could make it on the shuttle because WHO KNEW when another one would come. When we arrived at Thrifty, it the jankiest car rental kiosk I've ever seen. The line was long, and there was only one employee taking customers. Even though it was the middle of the day, on a weekday. How are you not fully staffed during that time??? When we finally got to the front of the line, we told the Thrifty employee that we needed a car seat (which we had noted when making the reservation). He walkied someone (presumably another employee out in the lot with the cars) that a car seat was needed at space 38 (which was the car we'd been assigned). We were told we would be getting a Kia Sportage. We got to space 38, and the car was not even a Kia. We waited at least 10 min for a car seat to be brought to the car, but no one came. We tried to ask an employee about getting the car seat. The employee said we had to go talk to someone inside. We said we did that, and we had been told to wait at space 38. The employee acted like we hadn't said anything and repeated that we had to go talk to someone inside. Needless to say, it took a damn long time for someone to finally bring a (terrible) car seat out to us. The entire experience was beyond frustrating. It took TWO. HOURS. From deplaning to get our rental car. The time it took to get our rental car was longer than our flight. When we got in line at Thrifty, Googlemaps said that it would take us an hour to get from to our destination from Thrifty. By the time we FINALLY got our car and were able to head out, the driving time had gone from an hour to two hours. Unless you truly have the patience of a saint and all the time in the world to waste, for the sake of your own sanity, do NOT book a Thrifty/Dollar rental car.

What what going to be a 300 something dollars car rental has now cost me up to 600 dollars. They do not tell you that a hold will be placed on your card or that they are going to charge you an additional $100 for an E-Zpass. There was one agent with 8 customers around the counter and no instructions on where to return the car. That cost me extra as well. I am going to have to fight in collections due to this car rental. I was also allowed to pay online with a debit card and was told when I got there it was not valid and would have to pay with credit. The whole thing is a mess, confusing and unprofessional. Staff first day was courteous. That's it.
