“Worked at the old Bank of Nova Scotia 1960-62. I was lucky to survivethe cold. We had a space heater that was fed from an oil tank on the outside of the building and the line kept freezing up. We also had to heatour ink for our pens on the space heater when it worked. You always hadto wear mittens to write up customers bank books when they made a deposit. It was so cold you could see your breath when you exhaled,.I remember a lot of things and one morning the Americans from the Basecame to cash their cheques and we had trouble opening the safe or vault. The combinations fell off on the inside. We had to have it drilled over and open it hours later. One American had a personal cheque drawn on his home bank in Intercourse USA. We thought it was a joke but we took it and cashed it. There is a small town called Intercourse in the USA population 1200.”
