Firestorm Books is an incredibly important part of the Asheville community and a truly special space, described as a favorite and a gem. It is not just a bookstore but a worker-owned cooperative and a non-hierarchical collective. The shop has an amazingly wide and interesting collection of books, often featuring titles difficult to find elsewhere, including a focus on anarchist, socialist, LGBTQ, women's rights, Palestinian liberation, and other left-leaning and revolutionary subjects, alongside a very cool children's section. It is a small store with many unique books. In addition to books, Firestorm offers plenty of great gifts like stickers, zines, art prints, buttons, and other merchandise. The staff provides fantastic service, and if a book is not on hand, they will order it. The business plays a vital community role by hosting amazing free events, having a meeting room anyone can book, supporting local nonprofits and collectives, and participating in activism like packing banned books for distribution. The space is noted as gorgeous and much bigger in its new location. A noted policy is requiring masking to cultivate a culture of care during the ongoing pandemic. A mentioned downside is the lack of available parking. Customers feel lucky to have Firestorm in town, highly recommend it, and encourage support through recurring donations.
Popped in to grab a greeting card and surprisingly discovered they have a lovely diverse children's book collection. This is a safe space and the last place you'll run into a fascist. We will make a conscious effort to return when we have more time to browse.
