If you value customer service and your own sanity, DO NOT ever bank here. I wanted to use a "localish" bank so I opened an account. From the get go, I had numerous issues with high fees and arbitrary overdraft fees. I spent countless minutes on the phone trying to take care of the fees and no one could figure out why I had overdraft fees. They would only take off the overdraft fees after I would go talk to the branch manager, who still couldn't figure out why I had fees. Finally they started saying that it was the "timing" of my deposits, even though their online system was would show that I had not overdrawn my account. Basically it's clear that this bank was manipulating the "time" of my transactions to overdraw my account. When I said that according to my records and my deposit records I should not have overdrawn my account they just shrugged. Stay away from these thieves!!

First bank is the bank our company uses and they're usually all right. However the one on merrimon AV. would not cash my CO employees check for 20 minutes. He also said he would like it cashed three times and she still kept asking how much do you want to deposit. Never going back here again terrible bank.

I live in Asheville and I sold my car and I needed a notary. Well there were 4 people working and doing nothing. No customers and they said they can’t do a notary unless I have a bank account there . Really nasty people. I went to the bank next door and they welcomed me

Exceptional service. Opened a bank account and got a vehicle loan with minimal difficulty - and some AWESOME customer service. The team went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly. And it did!A special thanks to Olivia for all of her help and effort.

Mel, the branch manager, has gone above and beyond for me on several occasions. I can't imagine any other bank going to the same lengths for their customers.

Seven months ago after very unsatisfactory service at the largest local bank I opened a checking account with First Bank. This has proven to be the best banking decision I have ever made and have had accounts all over the country. The staff is exceptionally professional and caring: if they dont know the answer for a specific issue, they do the research, find the answer and communicate it timely. Whether you are a new resident or just looking to make a change you will be happy you chose First Bank.

Excellent bank. I have dealt with folks personally and with my two companies for nearly 30 years through the old ASB and now the new group and I find them Top Notch and professional. I would recommend them to anyone.

Leadership will not call you back when you have a problem. No followup at all. Huge lack of professional business standards with leadership.

It takes a lot for me to leave a negative review but since Asheville Savings transitioned to First Bank... it's been nothing but terrible and I was with Asheville Savings for nearly 13 years. No more. Would not recommend them to anyone now. I had a personal and a business account. Being self employed early on can be feast or famine and sometimes, every dollar counts. Since the transition... you can no longer link a debit card up with paypal for instant deposits. Square can still deposit instantly but online banking now says the funds are available but... if you use them in the first 24 hours, your account is overdrafted. Happened to me 3 times in a row even though I was opted out of overdraft protection. They gave the money back but basically, I had to wait 24 hours to use “available fundsâ€. Online banking began to lag where transactions normally took a day or two to clear and now it's 2 to 4 days. My business account was drained when I had to go to an unexpected funeral. An $8 charge (my mistake) overdrafted the business account. I had to wait until I caught up again from my trip to pay the $8 plus the OD fee. This was about a week and when I go in to clear the balance, I was hit with another $36 as an overlimit fee which I never experienced with Asheville Savings. So, I had to wait again and another week later, I was hit with a $10 overlimit maintenance fee. I then sat on it for 2 more weeks to look for a new bank but decided that I needed to get checks in the bank and figured I'd go ahead and take the $85 hit until I could find a bank I like. But... they shut down my business account. No notice. No phone call. Nothing. It appears quite clear that First Bank's only priority is to make money on your money by holding it longer then necessary, and charging you any kind of fee they can throw at you. Also, I went in person to deposit my checks last Friday but instead of the usual 4 to 5 familiar tellers and the fast short lines of yesteryear... there were all new tellers and there was a teller for the drive-thru, a teller at the counter, and a teller stuck on the phone with a line to the door that was not moving. I had enough and walked out with my checks and then found out they shut down my business account. Completely done with First Bank and strongly considering reporting them to the the Federal Reserve. If you're shopping for banks... just don't do this one. They don't care about you in the least. They care about your money. Thievery corporation 101.

MORTGAGE REFINANCE BEWARE. DON'T DO IT. I worked for months on a refinance with Patrick. He's awesome. This was my second time working with him and the bank. My loan started with Asheville Savings and ended after they switched to First Bank. I paid $450 for an appraisal through McRoberts-Miller Appraisals. This appraisal contained mistakes, omissions, and used comps from other neighborhoods and ones very unlike mine. Appraisals are opinions. I understand that. However, when they contain mistakes or leave important features out they should be edited. This is where I have a problem. I informed First Bank about the mistakes and omissions and I even included pictures. The bank either does not have the power or inclination to facilitate these corrections. The specific point that killed my loan was that i needed to replace all my windows. The bank told me "the windows appear original and appear in fair condition (must be replaced)". Maybe they needed replacing you say? Some have been replaced in the last 5 years. They have all been painted since we bought the house. They all open. Some were even replaced with double pane Lowe's special order brand new windows. The appraisal did not include any pictures to support the problems with the windows. Just that they all needed to be replaced. My banker's response to this part of the appraisal was "I was wondering if maybe you beat up the appraiser", "I disagree strongly", and " those windows should not have to be done". No change. The bank stands on the decision. My point is that your loan depends on the bank's standard operating procedures and this bank seems to be unable to step outside these rules even when they, in their own words, see something wrong. They do not have the ability to make corrections to appraisals with mistakes, omissions, and bad conclusions. They are locked to the appraisal and for me they used an appraiser that makes mistakes. Your loan depends on the luck of the draw on who they hire to do your appraisal. Good luck if you start a refi with them. You've been warned.

We have personal and business banking with ASB. I don't even have the energy to describe the infuriation with using on line banking for business. There is no after hours or weekend help for business banking. We have been locked out multiple times, given new log in info and again doesn't work. Some of it claiming the merge with First Bank causing issues. How about having extra level of support? We are moving EVERYTHING to Wells Fargo- I could care less of their abuses at this point- I need on line banking to work Everytime I log in, support 24/7 in case there is an issue and Wells offers that. Use ASB/first bank at your own risk, we are finished!!

Representatives at Asheville Savings Bank continue to refuse to give me copies of my statements from last year without a hefty fee. I'm encountering inflexibility, and what I think is a mix of corporate slave mentality and/or a mentally self-enslaved manager. I am frustrated that I can't access my own data from last year.

Here's what I wrote the branch manager: "wow it sucks that you are either enslaved by the asheville savings bank or by your own mind to the point that you can't help someone who needs it. especially someone who was a banking customer for several years. it's also bad policy on the part of a company to refuse to help customers in need. i hesitate to curse you directly because i know it's bad luck for everyone concerned. i hope these blockages dissolve, and know that i hate the system that makes you and i such slaves." Sheri wrote me: "The charge for statement copies is a standard fee and is disclosed in our terms and conditions. Should you want additional statement copies the charge is $5.00 per statement and I will be glad to help you." @Asheville Savings Bank
