I was a Fall Leadership Semester student and I proudly say that my Outward Bound course changed my life. I was headed down a bad path and was encouraged by my family to see what courses NCOBS had to offer. I finally landed on "Go big or go home" and decided the 65-day course was the one I wanted to do. My instructors were so caring and supportive and truly provided an incredible experience. Yes, it was insanely hard, but I think that's the point of Outward Bound. Showing students that life isn't easy and there will be tough obstacles in life is important. What's more important is teaching people of all ages the tools to communicate with compassion and work with others through hard times, and my Instructors did just that. I still stay in contact with my crew members and we laugh and cry about some of the crazy stories we have. I LEFT MY COURSE THINKING EVERYONE ON EARTH SHOULD TAKE AN OUTWARD BOUND COURSE. I couldn't be happier with my decision to enroll at NCOBS as oppose to another Outward Bound school because of the people I met and relationships I was able to make with their field and office staff. 10/10 would recommend to young adults and parents.

Outward Bound has a very strict Covid policy. They will not be revisiting their policy until November 2023. I would strongly encourage anyone considering OB to read, read, read every line and word of their policy. It might just change your plans! The way they treat positive cases and "close contact" individuals (including young students)- is disappointing, concerning and heartbreaking!

Outward Bound's COVID protocol is outdated and absurd. Ten 14-15 year olds are currently in the woods wearing masks and sleeping alone because they were in close contact with another student who tested positive for COVID. The CDC doesn't recommend masking outdoors. Hospitals no longer require mask wearing and rarely test. It is 2023!! This is truly child abuse. OB calls themselves an inclusive organization yet they are literally singling out healthy kids, making them to feel like lepers. I will never recommend this organization and my younger children will not be attending this program. We need to get back to 2019. If a student is sick they don't come. If they become sick on course, they go home. OB used to be such a reputable organization. I hope they can get back to their roots.

Did a mini course through school for 10 days in Nov 1971. Hiking, obstacle courses, rock climbing & rappelling, baking granola, 20 mile group trail hike & bushwhacking—students only (no gps! Just a magnetic compass, map & description of desired destinations) culminating with a 2 night solo and then hike back to camp for the going away party later that evening. Incredible, unforgettable experience. Shout out to Chip, our leader.

July 1986 I had the greatest experiences ever when I was at home I did end up on my final Trek out off of the Appalachian trail end up in the hospital from numerous bee stings but when I was there I experienced everything and I loved it all, and if I had the experience to go back and teach and teach kids not to turn out like a bad kid you turn out to be a good person and end up enjoying life this is the place to go. You learn to achieve and not fail. My father Jeter McKinley was a instructor and I would like the opportunity to be able to come sprinkle his ashes off the side of one of our favorite climbs. Please get in touch with me so we can set something up.

I went when I was 17 and again when I was 19. Both were amazing experiences.

I recently completed a 72 day gap year semester North Carolina Outward Bound course that took place in Patagonia, the Everglades national park, and the Blue Ridge mountains. In the three months that I was on course, I was challenged and pushed harder than ever before in my young adult life. Through crossing a glacier in Argentina, to paddling for 24 hours straight in the Everglades, to rock climbing and white water canoeing in the mountains of North Carolina, I was pushed out of my comfort zone every day. I became extremely close with my ten crew mates, and every instructor I had on course. Now as I am adjusting back into life not living in the woods, I notice changes within myself on a daily basis, from the way I approach conflict, to the way I think about myself. I have a lot to thank Outward Bound for, but in particular I dedicate my new found work ethic, confidence, and ability to deal with difficult situations to NCOBS and will never forget the endless memories I made while on course.
