This vet and his team saved my 17 year old Pomeranians life today. I just moved to the area and he was attacked by a dog. Without hesitation they saw him, and carefully stabilized him so he could undergo surgery for face sutures. He is doing great tonight, eating and happy — I have several more animals that will be transferred here and I’m so grateful for their compassion and willingness to help me! ? They deserve more than 5 stars!

Businesses and employees make mistakes, I get that. I’m sorry I have to write this but my experience here was traumatic enough that I have been losing sleep. My bird still holds his foot closely in pain, and so this is a serious warning to bird owners to not trust your birds at this practice like I foolishly did.I bought my 16 year old parrot in for a routine blood panel. I figured I’d get his beak and nails trimmed while he was there, since it’s usually easier when a professional does it.First of all, this vet is not an accredited avian vet. I wouldn’t have even known, since he never introduced himself and the lobby is mysteriously closed. I just happened to ask if he was the bird doc. I didn’t realize you could advertise as an avian vet without accreditation, but honestly I didn’t think what we’d come in for was complicated. I now realize how big of an oversight that was on my part. I will always check now. While toweling my parrot and attempting to view into his mouth, etc, the vet repeatedly tapped on his beak like a spanking for not staying still. This was the moment I realized something wasn’t quite right. The vet was unable to take vitals due to the patient being too squirmy, and so chalked them up as “seems fine”. He was unable to draw blood using a needle from either the jugular or the wing due to “so many feathers”, and so cut my birds toenail deep into the quick when I wasn’t looking. We gave my pet a moment to rest and he was collapsing in my hands from stress. The vet then took him and proceeded to slowly squeeze the blood out, drop by drop, into two vials, while complaining that birds can stop blood flow when they are stressed. It took several painful minutes.I should definitely have just left after that, but since he was already messing with his feet, and I still kind of trusted them as professionals, I thought it wouldn’t be so much harder to finish the nail trim because almost anyone can do that.My friends, I will never forgive myself for what happened next. The vet tech holding him I think is very inexperienced. After they did a pretty poor job of trimming, I couldn’t take the sounds of suffering anymore. He was handed to me and I saw the strangest thing. His eyes were no longer shiny and bright. The light reflected off them strangely. At first I thought he was dead. But he was still breathing, and so then I realized that both of his eyeballs were poked inward. Like pushed in bubble wrap. This sickening image is haunting me every time I try to sleep. I screamed “his eyes!” and showed them. The vet grabbed him quickly and rubbed his eyes and somehow they regained shape. He said it was due to the pressure, and said “he’s fine now, isn’t he?” several times in an exasperated tone, but I don’t know if he is. The vet tech tried to tell me later that it was his feathers, but we all saw it. I feel like I’ll never stop seeing it.I was in shock as I paid the $400 bill. The next day I got an email with the blood test results. All was fine except some issues with cell counts that I don’t claim to understand. It was recommended we come back in to take more blood.I replied asking if any of his inflammation could be explained by the tremendous amount of stress he was under during the procedure. I never heard back. This event will haunt me. I regret putting my trust in these people. They tortured and almost killed my pet right in front of me and never even followed up to check on him.Truly a surreal experience that I will never forget. Please, my fellow bird owners, don’t make my mistake.

RUDE STAFF! Except for 1 or 2, it is my opinion the staff here are rude, outright disrespectful, argumentative, and have no compassion. I have put up with the inconvenient hours for years due to the kindness of the doctor and some of his staff but I will be taking my business elsewhere.

The Doctor is wonderful and every nurse + Julie and Emma at the desk are about the best you can find on earth. They take extra special care of our kitten and we would not trust anyone else.

RUDE STAFF! Except for 1 or 2, it is my opinion the staff here are rude, outright disrespectful, argumentative, and have no compassion. I've literally had a staff member arguing over a misunderstanding while I was dealing with an incredibly hard diagnosis and it was right in front of the doctor. I spoke to him about it, and he apologized and reprimanded her. I said as a favor to him I won't write a bad review, but if it happens one more time, I will feel compelled to because this just can't happen. Unfortunately, I have now experienced several more incidences with several of the staff before I chose to write this today. I have put up with the inconvenient hours for years due to the kindness of the doctor and some of his staff but I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Dr Wager has cared for my pets for many years. He is an excellent doctor who is willing to explain complex choices for our pets medical needs in a manor that allows us to make informed choices for their care and treatment. The staff is very friendly and alway demonstrates a very high level of competence. I will not trust my pets medical needs with any other veterinary clinic.

We have been with Blue Ridge Animal Hospital for 3 decades. Dr. Wagoner and his staff have always been wonderful to our many fur babies and we appreciate them. They even take the time to rub our dogs tummy when she is nervous!

I bring some of my rats here and they treat us very well. They are super caring and the vet tech who always sees us treats my boys like they’re her own. The vet always cover all his bases when it comes to diagnosing and treating my rats. They call to check up on how the treatment is working/ schedule rechecks also which most vets don’t do in my experience. The staff is very knowledgeable when it comes to rodents and are gentle with my boys. They can always squeeze us in when we have an emergency.

We were visiting from out of town and our dog cut his paw on a piece of broken glass. The animal hospital took us right away when we called. The staff was so friendly and knowledgeable, treated our dog’s wound with care, and gave us detailed instructions on what we needed to do with our pup before we left the hospital. I highly recommend them!

The doctor and all the assistants seemed to really care about Pepper. I was able to bring her in on short notice and it was on a holiday. I will forever be greatful for that.

i called to ask if the doctor had experience with pet ducks. I was told he did, that he'd been in practice 40 years, and how in that time he'd seen it all. I made it clear, initially to the intake person and later to the doctor himself, that i was concerned she was eggbound BUT she'd been passing shell-less eggs for several weeks, not due to unavailable calcium supplement or poor quality food. He mashed around on her abdomen, a bit deeper than I was comfortable with, but I hoped he was indeed experienced. She didn't seem to be hurt by it anyhow. He announced that he didn't feel any egg, and again, I reminded him of no hard shell, so feeling an egg might not be as expected...he even suggested X-rays which again, no hard shell so what exactly did he think he'd see. I even showed him a picture of the "rubber egg" she layed a few days previous. Here's the problem. Neither he nor his assistant really seemed to be paying attention or listening. Maybe his bloodshot eyes were from lack of sleep? I don't know. Maybe her having to go back into the clinic twice to have him repeat home care instructions, maybe she too was having a bad day. Why didn't this seasoned vet imagine that my sweet little duck was swollen on her insides and at least prescribe an antibiotic as a precautionary!? It wasn't until I was home and she was in her warm bath and pushed out a red tinged string like something, that it hit me! Peritonitis! she must have had one of those funky eggs I showed him a picture of break on the way out and she was infected in there! Their office was closed when I figured that out! Why didn't this 40 yr experienced vet imagine that possibilty that's actually very common with fowl!!! She died that night. Maybe instead of the fluids he gave her (?) she was not dehydrated...Maybe an antibiotic would've helped!!! Oh, and the calcium he also gave her, based on her weight of course? He didn't even bother to subtract the weight of the heavy bath towel I brought with her, and deduct that amount previous to calculating the calcium dose. She could've had a heart attack from too much calcium! To me that's entirely incompetent, and looking back it should've been enough for me to yank her out of there. I called the office to express my disenchantment relaying how incompetent the practice felt based on these points and in the background the tech in question was arguing with what she overheard, justifying it all rather that extend not only sincere condolences but a partial refund! $124 for missed calculation and missed diagnosis. Certainly don't take your pet ducks there.

Took us in after both our dogs were attacked by Hornets. We were on vacation and they helped us out. They were pleasant, efficient and informative. Thanks again Blue Ridge Animal Hospital. Trucker and Jolene thank you too!
