A wonderful museum that takes you on a journey through the history of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee. There is A LOT to read to get the most out of the experience, and very little in the way of interactivity. That said, there are wonderful exhibits. The gift shop is very overpriced ($55 for a paperback book?!). Staff could be a bit more customer service oriented. Overall, a fine experience.

It was a fantastic experience to stay in Cherokee to see the Fall leaves and visit the original tribal land of the Cherokee people, and still the reservation for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee People. The Museum features many artifacts, masks and displays that describe Cherokee life from 11,000 years ago to the Trail of Tears and relocation of many members to Oklahoma. It is so wonderful to see the Eastern Band still residing on their original reservation and preserving the land of their ancestors in Cherokee, NC.I would have given this review 5 stars except the movie that was to be shown to better explain the Cherokee People history was not running on 10/24/2023 when we visited. It would have been very helpful to learning their full story, but the museum was still worth visiting! There is a discount admission to AAA, AARP, and Veterans.Experience the history, culture, and stories of the Cherokee people.A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1948, the Museum of the Cherokee People is one of the longest-operating tribal museums in the country. Located in Cherokee, North Carolina on the Qualla Boundary, the sovereign land of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and ancestral homelands of all Cherokees, the Museum shares the history, culture, and stories of the Cherokee people through its exhibitions, collections, and programs.History of the MuseumThe Museum opened in 1948 and moved to its present facility in 1976. In 1998, its permanent exhibit was totally renovated and a new 12,000 square-foot exhibit was installed. An 8,500 square-foot education wing was added in 2010. Today, the Museum welcomes an estimated 83,000 visitors per year and continues to grow its storytelling and educational offerings.Operating Hours9am-5pm year-roundTicket sales close at 4pm. I really didn't like the drama Unto these hills. Seems cheezy with all the singing. Not sure why but the song Way Fairing Stranger seemed to be the song of choice. I don't feel this drama got the plight of the Native Americans and the trail of tears like it once did. Sure it brought out the government taking advantage of the Native Americans and that seemed to be the main point of interest. Not very disabled friendly. Actor/actresses did their job well and it seemed well produced and well rehearsed. I've been several times in my life time but I wasn't real impressed this time.

Absolutely phenomenal place to visit! If u are a motorcycle enthusiast then I highly recommend this museum! It's absolutely packed with bikes/motorcycles from every era since the very first. The history is an abundance and just seeing how they've evolved from then to know is simply remarkable. Be prepared to spend some time as it's an incredibly large museum packed but worth every moment ur able to dive deeply n2 the history packed exhibits and the knowledge that's with each.

The last stop on our family day trip was a visit to The Museum of the Cherokee Indian. My niece treated all of us for the $12.00 admission fee. The people working in the building were friendly, and would ask people where they were from. The tour is self guided with several items on display. This tour reminded of visiting the Lorraine Motel(civil rights museum) in Memphis, TN of how African Americans were treated. The Native Americans were treated just as badly. One of the displays is the Trail of Tears. There’s a gift shop at the end of the tour. If you haven’t visited The Museum of the Cherokee Indian, stop by for an educational visit. The 4 stars are because the women’s restroom was dirty.

We've been here many times over the years ... mostly for the gift shop. The museum itself is great for the first couple of times through, but we love the art and merch they offer at the shop. Usually. The last time we went (May 2023) they didn't have much in the way of merch. They might have been remodeling? Hard to tell without any signage. It was a little bit disappointing, but still a necessary stop whenever we're in the area.

I always enjoy learning history, so I dropped in to check this out. There was a lot of information, most of which you read on wall placards. It wasn’t well lit, so I had to use the light on my cell phone to read some of them. The theater was closed which saddened me because that’s often the best thing in small museums. Some exhibits were not working, the audio was broken. There were just a few interactive exhibits, my favorite was the talking leaves. At the end there is a veterans memorial and a gift shop.

The museum tells such a story of the history of the people and the way life came to be. Sad, uplifting, inspirational all in one. Must do if visiting or passing through Cherokee.
