I am always happy to support small businesses, but my food was so greasy and unimpressive that I couldn't eat it. The food looks much better in the reviews, so perhaps I visited on an "off" day.... but it's not fun to pay $50+ for a veggie quesadilla, shrimp soup, shrimp burrito, and horchata and not enjoy any of it. Pictured is the $14 shrimp burrito, which was mushy and tasteless, served with a half order of stale fries. The second photo is the veggie quesadilla drenched in oil. The soup was also sub-par. I couldn't eat it, unfortunately. The service was friendly, but I wouldn't recommend take out. ?

The most amazing small business mexican places I've been to. Family owned and operated.11/10 if I had to give a rating to the food. fresh tasting, the tamales are amazing, the Acp is amazing, the burritos are amazing. Vegetarian fajitas and burritos are amazing. All in all, my first choice for Mexican food in burke ,caldwell, or catawba.Vegetarian options: Vegetarian fajitas or burritos. can request customizations. produce used always tastes fresh.

So happy to have found The Aztec Chef! It was our final day on the road & we needed that one last meal to get us home. This charming little spot is part of a gas station-minimart situation - but don't let that deter you. This spotless place is run by a nice couple who could not have been friendlier or more gracious. The salsa options were good - we particularly loved the verde. Tacos were basic but tasty - same for the huevos rancheros. Both dishes were fresh, piping hot and nicely prepared (possibly a bit over-salted in parts but overall quite good). Highest marks go to the CHUNKY GUACAMOLE - cold, fresh and made-to-order - a delightful, perfectly balanced, chunky mix of avocado, tomato, onion, garlic and lime - with bites of chilled cucumber and rough-chopped cilantro - which made this memorable plate more like a salad than the more common chips-and-dip version one might expect. Overall a great experience - thanks Aztec Chef!!

TL/DR: Tiny authentic Mexican restaurant next to a gas station. Impressively large menu. Husband and wife team with a newborn cooing in the back. Several Hispanic diners, which is always a good sign. Ordered: (3) Softshell ground beef tacos, (1) Carnita Sope, (1) Unsweetened iced tea. $18.75. Tacos? Pretty basic. Not a tremendous amount of ground beef, but they were large, freshly made, and filling. I did not leave hungry. Carnitas Sope? Freshly made and pretty good. I ended up putting the carnitas meat and lettuce and tomatoes on the tacos. LOLIced Tea. Huge Styrofoam cup. It came with lemon, and it was good.Complimentary chips and Salsa were served hot. Salsa was mild. I used the salsa to jazz up my tacos. Wait for food? Maybe a couple of minutes for the chips and salsa. Five minutes for the tacos. A couple more minutes for the carnitas sope. The food was prepared to order, so these times were very reasonable. Service? Excellent. Both husband and wife inquired about my food several times. Friendliness of the owners. Excellent. The were patient with my lack of Spanish.Restaurant? Five, four occupants, booths. By noontime the place was full. Fortunately, there are plenty of covered picnic tables outside for al fresco dining. Parking? Not much. I guess that one could potentially park on the adjoining street and across the highway if worse came to worst. Most people were ordering take-out, so parking wasn't a problem when I was there for lunch.Cleanliness? The tables were cleared immediately after customers left. There was no trash anywhere. The owners seem to take pride in their restaurant. I noticed that horchata was listed on the wall menu. I LOVE horchata. I judge a Hispanic by their quality of horchata. I wish that I'd have seen that when I was ordering. It's something to remember for next time.
