Love the staff and location; but, the building being held together with bandaids and tape as they are at the mercy of the developers. I pray the new building will have a sauna and steam room.

During my year of membership, it seems like something's always out of order in this place. If it's not the steam room, it's the sauna, the pool, etc. These amenities are often out of order for days, sometimes weeks.

For me, this Y is a happy place. It is so convenient and it has all I need. I love the pool and I also like to workout in the gym upstairs. Everyone that works there, like Tony, is exceptionally nice.It can get crowded after work and can be tough to find the dumbbells you need. It's never a problem to get a cardio machine and the locker rooms are never too crowded. If the classroom studio is open, there are lots more dumbbells in the lighter range in there. I do wish they would have another dumbbell rack of the commonly used lighter weights (10, 15, 20lbs) in the main area.I gave four stars versus five to be clear that it is nothing fancy because I know some people will be looking for somewhere more sleek and shiny and new. I actually like that it feels more like a community center, which is sort of the idea of the Y, than some trendy gym. I grew up going to Ys and even worked at one for two years. I do hope they fix the pool hot water heater, though! Otherwise, it is way too cold for swimming in the coming winter months

I am vacationing in beautiful Durham, NC and was looking for a place to work out so I signed up for a 7-day pass at the Durham YMCA on Blackwell St in the American Tobacco Center. The building is ultra classy and modern looking and the surrounding grounds are excellent with a fountain and lots of cafes and other shops. The YMCA facility itself is small but has all the amenities I am interested in with a large selection of aerobic machines, a full assortment of both free weights and universal weight machines and kits of clean towels. The equipment is all very clean and functional and the locker rooms are both spacious and spotless. The employees I have encountered so far are also very polite and helpful. The ONLY DRAWBACK I have found (and it's a big one) is that they are closed on both Saturday and Sunday, which is a drag since I love working out on those days. Luckily there is another YMCA in Durham (on Morgan St.) that is only a few blocks away and open on Saturday. This facility is much larger and much more of a "traditional" Y as it is an older facility with all the funkiness and smells of an older building.

I've been going to their gym for a while now. I like it, it's calm, has good equipment, no problems with people there. At times they play music too. I've heard things about their sauna for men not working, I haven't tried it yet but I want to. Also my family goes swimming sometimes and they enjoy their time spent there.

Member here for the last year, staff is super friendly and overall a great gym. Pool, basketball courts and track were awesome. Some of the equipment is a little dated in the workout area, but it still works and is well taken care of.

The front desk team is always so nice and helpful. You can stop and talk or just say hello on your way through.Gym equipment is old but maintained. Plenty of room to get a solid workout in.Love the pool, carpeted locker rooms, and steam room.Walking track is great for warming up or just getting out of the house to walk around.

Hands down the worst gym I have ever been to. Equipment is dated. U have to search everywhere for bands , handles , etc. The locker room is awful. The staff is not helpful. The steam room is always broken , and when fixed , lackluster. The sauna is sometimes on but no one knows how to get it on when off evidently. Horrible horrible gym. The only reason I , and many others , go to a YMCA in 2023 is due to the lacking gym supply in downtown. Begging for someone to open a lifetime fitness or ffc type gym in the city. Put this place out of business

I've only been a member for a week, but my experience so far feels like the life change I've been so badly desiring. The facility is great, but the staff (i.e., LaRoy- front desk, and Bob- swim instructor) and the members make me feel so welcome and part of this community. I can't say enough about my experience so far.

Clean Y with modern, well-maintained facilities. Excellent service at the front desk from Shakeema, who connected me with a guest pass while I was in town. Made good use of weight room, basketball court and sauna.

The Durham Downtown Y is a wonderful place. The clientele is all different kinds of folks, different shades, different economic conditions etc. The Y serves everyone. It is the world like I would want it to be. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Yes, the building is worn but I love it for who is there and the inclusive, friendly atmosphere. And, they are building a new bigger, better building on the same spot starting in Dec 2022 or Jan 2023.

At the price of the membership I was expecting alot more from the weight room. Please work on it worn torn and old equipment.

Is there a law of quantum physics that the steam and sauna cannot work at the same time as the steam and sauna at the Lakewood Y? The steam at Lakewood is down, and then, so as the sauna at the Downtown Y?
