Couldn't have been happier with our first experience at this terrific little spot! I come to Durham from PA several times a year to visit my elderly parents at Croasdaile; we are always looking for new dining spots to try, and this one did not disappoint. My mother suffers from both cognitive and dietary issues, and our wonderful server couldn't have been more friendly, upbeat and accommodating. She brought my mom a special gluten targeted menu especially suited for her needs and patiently helping talk her through all the choices, then kept checking back to ensure all was well. The specials were amazing, (hot honey Brussels sprouts?? Smoked blueberry mezcal margarita?!?! Dang!) and oh wow, that brisket....I'll be dreaming about it until I can come back again for my next visit! Literally the most tender I've had in ages. Give this wonderful place a try and I'm betting you'll be back. I know I will!

Quality in general has declined since the pandemic. The fried chicken used to kill it and now it's just a letdown every time I order it.It won't fall off my radar, just not as good as it once was.

Came to Durham for work trip. Fantastic locally owned BBQ place, whole hog smoking, micro brews, love the food here. You won't go wrong eating here

Very friendly staff, food was good. I wasn't expecting red onion on my Fried Green Tomato BLT because it doesnt mention onion on it in the menu, it was still good but I dont prefer a lot of onion so I had to take some off. No sauce on the pulled bbq that we could tell. Was a bit dry by itself. The seasonal squash side was amazing.

We come here all the time after a hike and it always hits the spot. Definitely the best bbq spot in Durham by far!!! Very dog friendly, quick and lovely service, and there isn't one dish that isn't good. My personal favorite is the beef brisket plate! Highly recommend.

Ambiance and cleanliness was the best part of this place. The fried oysters and banana pudding were good. However $12 for 3 oysters and $6 for a very small portion of pudding is tough to root for.The bbq was well below average. Brisket was very dry and portion was small. Pork was flavorless and seemed old. Bbq sauce tasted like ketchup.Sides were average. Nothing memorable.Charged extra for asking for half lemonade and half water instead of a juice box on the kids meal.Service, had to ask for stuff that one would deem normal with bbq and hush puppies. Drinks weren't refilled once.Fun place to hang out. Disappointed w the food

I and my client came in the evening. We were greeted immediately. Friendly staff. I have to mention Carter who was our waiter. He has a bright smile and was very attentive. Carter came to our table plenty of times to make sure we were good! After all of that he said no pressure about the tip. ❤️ He deserves recognition. ?

My husband and I have been coming here as a couple & with our kids, for years and it's always a hit! Its laid back, with great food, tasty libations and it happens to be nestled into our neighborhood, perfectly located between work & home.

Excellent BBQ with good portion sizes. Two of us shared everything shown here, and it was plenty of food. I liked the unique approach to the sauce so much I took a bottle home (and regret not picking up a second or third bottle!).

Checked website, which said they were open. When I arrived, they were closed. On my last visit, we had to go to counter to get drink refills. BBQ was a bit dry. Everything else was tasty.

My husband and I love coming here for their brisket. So tender and juicy with a nice smoky flavor. Their baked beans had a unique flavor, not your typical sweet sauce baked beans. I had their brussel sprouts for the first time and they were very tasty. Just a bit undercooked but the flavor was delicious. Love their cole slaw and mac and cheese. The staff is always friendly and when not busy, the bar tender came around to everyone and asked if we were satisfied or if we needed anything. Picnic isn’t a large place, but it’s quaint and always clean. It’s always worth the 50 minute drive for us to come and get some of the best brisket at a very reasonable price. Everything is homemade including the desserts.

Wow! We had the most scrumptious experience here today! I had the sliced brisket sandwich with hush puppies and fried okra. We also had the fried pickles... Everything was absolutely delish and the service was so friendly too! Can't wait to get back ASAP!
