Because i was with my dad! We drove from Newport, him living in Texas, to HEAR someone "from the island". NO ONE, not nere gas station, store and even the museum with "the gal from the island"that works there was off due to medical needs. Prayerfully wellness for her during and after.. maybe I'll just have to try one more time. "Third time's a charm" The museum was quite lovely too! Cool seeing stuff from my youth and living room. ?

What a museum! With three levels of things to see, including an third floor lookout, this is a great museum for all ages. Elevator access to all levels and very nice bathrooms. If you bring the whole family, there's a "kids corner" area that I'm certain kids of all ages would enjoy. The exhibits are very well done, and I could truly stay here for hours. Definitely worth the ride to the end of the road for this gem. When we visit again, we will definitely return.

We stopped by to check out the Ferry System and came across this museum. If you are a wildlife photographer, I definitely suggest taking a visit to have some fun! Instantly, there will be plenty of birds to get some great shots! I went straight up to the tower and then took a nice walk on the trail around the pond. In general, you want to watch out for snakes when you are hiking in NC, but don't let that keep you from making this great stop!As well, when you are in the tower there is a really nice view of the Cape Hatteras Light House!

It was awesome, lots of hunting decoys, blinds, pictures, and Hurricane history with the changing of the coastline and a Tremendous Library full of Waterfowl hunting, decoy making, area history books. It was my second time, first after the Hurricane damaged and it is better than before. Also, the Gallery of Trees for Christmas was beautiful. We will be back next year.

Wow - we did not expect to enjoy it as much as we did, but it's amazing! Definitely GO!! Not only were there award-winning hand-carved decoys and an beautiful library, there were videos of life on the island, present and past, people discussing details of how they grew up here and what it meant to live here. There are relics preserved that were used in every day island life - many of the same things my mother and her parents used in the early- to mid-1900's. There is an education area that shows videos and displays of past hurricanes and what is happening with rising sea levels. We thoroughly enjoyed the cat walk at the top level - it would be about 5 stories up from the ground. What a VIEW!!! ?

Can only describe this place as a hidden treasure off the beaten path. Interesting display on the second floor of the villages in the area with what their residents felt was memorable about their town. The upper level observation deck gives a nice view of the Cape Lookout Lighthouse.

A fascinating museum, I need to read up on the whaling industry here in the outer banks. The lifesaving service display is very nice. All of wood carvings. The best line for a display. Paraphrasing "you take a piece of wood and carve away the pieces that don't look like a duck."There is a short nature trail, bring mosquito spray or you'll get ate up.

This is a large, 3 story center that is at the end of the Island. Plenty of parking right out front. The first floor is mostly a display of hand carved water fowl done by many different artist. They have a section giving details of the various storms that have been through the area which is well done. There is a gift shop as well. The second floor was the best for me. If you like antiques, you have to see this floor. So many wonderful old times and the history of the families the items belonged to. It gives you a very good "feel" for the locals. The third floor is a look out and you can see the surrounding area, even the lighthouse in the distance. This is a self guided center and is very nicely appointed and well done. I enjoyed my time there and learning about the area. Dont miss the Visitor's Center next door....another great place to learn about the area and they have an excellent movie to watch. You can buy your tickets for the ferry at the Visitors Center, which is where to board.

The Core Sound Waterfowl & Heritage Center is very close to the Island Express Fairy Service to Cape Lookout. It is also the overflow parking area for the ferry so this museum is easy to add in to your itinerary. The museum celebrates the history; the culture and the heritage of those that are from North Carolina's coastal area. The first floor has decoys and decoys and decoys and decoys as each year there is a big celebration on them as they are such a huge part of the area. Waterfowl provided sustence and the carved decoys lured them in. The decoys are such a work of art. Living on the Edge and Rising exhibits focus on the storms that have impacted the area and the damage caused and the physical changes that have happened to the coast. The exhibit has photos; videos; interviews with those impacted and so much reading material. The second floor focuses on the community. You will learn the history and traditions and the people that made up the Core Sound region. You will see artifacts; photos; antiques; documents and much more. Make sure to enjoy all of the quilts. Lookout Tower on the third level pays tribute to the Coast Guard. You can also view Core Sound; Back Sound, Barden's Inlet and the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. (Yes, there is an elevator to the tower.) If you are in the area, I highly recommend checking out this museum and the gift shop that has a lot of local products and artwork.
