We loved our stay at Blakeslee and were very impressed with the accommodations and location! This Air Force Recreation Area (AFRA) is open to military ID card holders (active, retired, DOD, etc). Our family friends recommended it after they visited with their RV. My mom made the reservation via the main office and there were very accommodating and helpful with all of the information. We booked a "cottage" and they have various ones to pick from (1, 2 and 3-4 bedroom). We stayed in a 2 bedroom cottage and it was all one story, had queen beds and twin beds in the layout, a common area, fully stocked kitchen and multiple bathrooms. The floors are cement so we took the advice of others and brought padded mats for our toddler and baby. We were also surprised with all of the kitchen items- utensils, pots, pans, toaster, microwave. There is no dishwasher so bring your own dish soap. There is also a washer and dryer. Sheets and bedding are provided. The wifi was the only thing that was a bit spotty and no strong signal. We loved the outdoor seating area overlooking the courtyard and watching the sunrises and sunsets. You can walk or drive over to the museum and check-in area. There is also a restaurant open to the public called Riverview. Next to the restaurant is a pier where we say people fishing and a sign that said watch out for alligators. We walked, enjoyed the scenery and spent time at the beach. You just cross the street and there is a public beach access walkway very close to the property. We also took the ferry from Fort Fisher to Southport which was a fun experience. The aquarium is also really close and of course Carolina and Kure Beach. We had a great stay! Thank you!

We are currently visiting for the 3rd time this year. Being here at Kure Beach and staying in the affordable cottage at Fort Fisher is always a nice, affordable, and relaxing vacation. The ferry is just 5 minutes down the road and so is the NC Aquarium. Love the fact that the beach is just across the road. Looking forward to coming back next year.

We enjoyed the housing and the proximity of the beach. The kids loved the sidewalk paths for their scooters. We were questioning how well the kitchens would be stocked and were pleased to find all the basics including what's shown in the photos. The hint for bringing house shoes or socks is a good one as the floors are frequently sandy and chilly. A large towel for wet feet right inside the door is another helpful addition as the floors will be slick after rinsing off.

Excellent gem we found, many before us have known about, we are just late learning of all these. Open to any military member, retired or spouses/family with military ID. "Cottages" , RV or tent camping available. Just a couple mins walk to the beach! Picture is view from our cottage door towards ocean.

Sure its a good place to stay. However with the money the place rakes in every year, the commander needs to fully staff the rec center and swimming pool Jun-Aug. Upgrade the bath house, and widen the concrete pads. Extend a water connection to the beach parking area to spray off beach items and kiddos before getting in car.Appears the money collected is not being invested back into on site amenities.

We stay every summer and every time I have the worst sleep of my life. Would it kill you to invest in new pillows? A full size bed just gets two pillows, that when put together you get the fluff of one $5 pillow from 1980 while you have a spring in your back. Yeah it’s across from the beach and may be cheaper than what’s around but at what cost? (And yeah I’m typing this at 1 AM after tossing & turning 3 hours) not a o mention the wifi never works and cell service inside the cottages are nonexistent.

Great campground with local public beach access. The camping spots are huge with plenty of space. The local shop has plenty of stuff!

This was the first time staying at this location for my wife and I. We had reserved an RV overflow site, which was very near the pier overlooking the Cape Fear river. Our site had electricity, but nothing else. There are 34 RV sites, 30 which have full hookups and numerous 1, 3 and 4 bedroom cottages that are available for use by anyone with a military ID. The cottages are located close to Fort Fisher Blvd and just across the road from Kure Beach. I have provided a sunset photo taken from the pier.

Stayed at the RV park. good location, close to the beach, the rec center has limited supplies but has ice for $3.50 a bag. Free cable. The wifi only worked the first day, so without wifi for 2 + days, mentioned this at the check in, they did not seem to care too much. Not a big deal. There is a very large field you can run your dogs (with limits). Services were good. there is a good latrine / shower close by. My guess you need to make reservations well in advance.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom cottage on Fort Fisher. They have pet friendly cottages, so reserved one. It worked out well and everything in the cottage was great. The area is across the street from the beach and had access to the beach. The welcome center for check in had a small store and rental services for bikes, kayaks, etc. If you are a veteran, retired, or active duty this is a nice getaway.

We're new to camping so we really appreciated the space between sites, at least until we get the parking down. Check in was friendly and efficient. The parking were concrete slabs with lots of room, we could probably have parked 2 travel trailers easily. The bath houses were clean with plenty of hot water and the dumpsters were easy to get to. The beach is about a five to ten minutes walk from the campsite and we were able to hear the surf from our site. The check in office is pretty easy to find and the people are very helpful in answering questions you may have. There are things that you can rent such as bicycles and golf carts. It looks like many people go there for the fishing, both pier and surf. We would definitely stay here again.

Sites are spacious but oddly configured, pads are over 80 feet but about 9 feet wide with half of the hookups on the wrong side for trailers and the do not differentiate between motor homes and trailers in site reservations. Great location across the street from beach and short walk to the river with fishing pier. Bath houses are nice, so set up with toilet sink and shower in each room. Recreation room advertised has not been open and pool closed the weekend prior to labor day which makes no sense but they do offer crafts for kids several times a week and have a concert every other Friday. Restaurant on site but haven't tried it, they have a limited menu. Great location that could easily be a 5 star location if they opened the amenities they advertised and put some thought in site reservations or layout.

Most of the bathrooms were closed for some reason. Otherwise this is a nice place to camp and visit the beach. There is a good sized fishing pier and a all boat ramp next to the restaurant. I saw many people coming and going in the late afternoon and evening. Definitely will be back here again with my trailer.

Great place! Can someone let me know the schedule for the restaurant as of July 2022? It doesn't seem to match up with Google. We camped here July of 2021 and had a spectacular time. The camp store has lots of goodies and you can rent bikes, surf boards and other outdoor recreation toys, the staff are very friendly and accommodating, you can walk to the beach as well as to the Cape Fear River where there is a boat slip and a pier with great fishing to be had.
