We have stayed at the First Colony Inn twice before and we were very pleased. It was a BIG mistake to return for our 50th Wedding Anniversary!!!!
The staff was wonderful that's about it!!!!
It is so sad that this once beautiful Historic Inn has been left to fall to ruin. It needs maintenance badly. The screens on our private porch wore torn and a plethora of stink bugs flew in the porch. Only one chair and a dirty, rusty, broken table so not very user friendly either.
The heated towel bar didn't work and the bathroom fixtures were old and rusty. Nothing was at comfort height making it so difficult for us seniors. There is black mold on the bathroom ceiling which is a health concern!!!! Carpeting in our room was filthy! The furniture was old and worn, not charming antiques by any means. The bed was ok but I'm questioning the cleanliness of the bedding
The outside needs a good power wash and paint desperately. The railings were so dirty I didn't want to touch them to navigate the stairs. The grounds seemed to be somewhat maintained but the pool area was not.
The beach access has not been maintained either and could use a bit of help with clearing debris and trimming plants.
We made the best of our stay but we truly were highly disappointed this historic place has been let go.
We won't be coming back! 😪

We have previously stayed at this Inn and loved it however this time we weren’t as crazy about it. First of all the staff and very friendly and helpful at breakfast time, but if you need anything after like 5pm forget it. No one is around to answer any questions. They have an ice room that’s locked so you’re unable to get ice. The freezer in frig doesn’t get cold enough to even freeze ice. The swing on porch was broken and the place could use a little updating. I loved the old Nags Head charm of this place, but it definitely could use a little love. I’m hoping they fix some things, but until then we will stay somewhere else.

How is this place so affordable?
The price of this should be double what they charge.
My girlfriend and I have different tastes. I like the more classical look and she likes updated modern things. This place offered both.
We have a bureau, couch, nice chair, and an awesome king size bed. We also have a complete kitchen set plus the conventional hotel stuff. They even offer sit-down breakfast and it was amazing!
We've stayed at other similar neighboring establishments, which are also very nice, but they're not quite on the same caliper as this.
Their pool is great, their lawn is great, and my girlfriend says they have a cute garden.
If you have read to this point, book this place.

Nice but just ok. First impression was great. Our stay was from a Saturday to the following Friday. The weekend staff were nice, patient, and laid back. The staff starting on Monday was nice but controlling (we were given a lecture about using the wrong door for breakfast). Breakfast was just OK. Scrambled eggs with or without cheese and day old pastries is what we have at home on a daily basis. From all o the great reviews, my expectations where propset too high. We only ate it once then found other places to eat.
What you should know...
The lobby hours are from 8:00am -5:00pm. This is the only time you will have access to the ice machine as they will not share the entry code to the ice room with any guest.
Easy access to the beach. Short walk - Very scenic. There are beach chairs by the back deck of the B&B for guest to borrow. They may forget to share this detail with you, they didn't with us.
The rooms have a keyless entry. We stayed in the Agnes Woods (#26). It was spacious with a queen size bed (soft mattress and pillows). There is a microwave, mini refrigerator (worked great), keurig coffee maker (couldnt figure it out though), and small 2nd sink. No toaster.
The walkout porch is very small with a table & 2 chairs ...it's not big enough to be a usable space and was dirty.
The bathroom provided a nice shower but the ceiling air vent doesn't work and housekeeping forgot to clean the floor after the last guest.
There is a a/c unit in the wall, which worked very well.

As always - truly outstanding and a wonderful experience. Lisa and all the folks at FCI ensured that our stay was memorable and very comfortable. Extremely accommodating with any request and they ensured that our expectations are fully met. Location is perfect - close enough to get to anything in the OBX in minimal time but far enough from the massive crowds that you often encounter in the heavily populated areas. Highly recommended for any and all!

The best stay we could have booked! I love a stay with a rich history. The Inn was beautiful and was perfect distance from the beach. And they have some of the most comfortable beds you’ve ever slept in!

Our experience at the inn was exceptional, with the beach being readily accessible on foot. The staff were friendly and promptly dealt with any small concerns that we had. The breakfast was delicious, with the cinnamon rolls being a notable highlight.

This is a Historic Inn which we have stayed at numerous times. The furniture is more antique but comfortable. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. The Inn is situated off the main highway but still feels out of the way. They have a pool and also their own private entrance to the beach. Beach chairs are provided, too. If you feel like a bike ride they have those as well. My favorite is their lovely breakfast and afternoon snack time. All this is included in the price. Upstairs is a library with books and games for those rainy days. If you feel lazy, sit on the balcony and rock away your day. This is a great place without spending a fortune.

I have ONLY good things to say about this hotel. The historic charm and crew who work there, alone, make this location outstanding. As an individual who works in the hospitality industry it’s hard to be a guest but the team made it so easy to relax and unwind. The breakfast was DELICIOUS and the chef was so attentive and supportive of my dietary needs. The front desk team was kind and welcoming and incredibly helpful in helping my family as we set up our needed rooms. We ended up with adjoining rooms (3&4) and they were lovely and perfect for our family of 5. The pool was clean and beautiful. The garden were lush and perfect. There’s even a great cafe right next store with fantastic lattes. Can’t wait to come and stay again!!

Five stars BUT not our particular room. The inn is wonderful. Unbeatable location. Generally well-maintained for it age. Interesting landscaping. Very good breakfast, too. Those are the undeniable "pros". Also, our room was nice size and the air-conditioning worked well. Cons: The bed was not good. Low in the middle and not at all firm- like sleeping in a hammock. The bathroom was tiny and there was nowhere to put your personal items (unless you don't mind shutting the lid on the toilet and putting them there!) Also, the stairs up to the 3rd floor are not well-lit at night. So, all of these "cons" are easily remedied, and I hope the Inn will see to correcting them. Still, this is a great place to stay on OBX.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stat at First Colony Inn. Staff was wonderful. Special thanks to Mary at breakfast who was a complete joy and Alma, who helped us with our luggage upon arrival, plus the groundkeeper. Will definitely be back next year, and will recommend First Colony Inn to all planning a stay at OBX.
