About Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge
Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge is a peaceful and beautiful place perfect for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Located near the Outer Banks, it features a large lake and rich natural surroundings. Visitors can enjoy several walking trails, including a short trail over a swampy area where birds and deer may be seen quietly moving about. Restrooms are available at the visitor center, and dogs are welcome on the grounds. Visitors can also cross the lake via a bridge or drive along the wildlife drive to experience the serenity and beauty of the environment. A beautiful NWR not far from the Outer Banks. On the day I visited I must have seen three dozen herons of various varieties as well as many other birds. I can't wait to go in the winter when all the waterfowl arrive.
