We contacted Bide Awhile approximately six weeks ago because we were interested in adopting an adult cat to keep our first cat company.
When we arrived admin staff was dismissive, rude, and unprofessional. She was more interested in the piece of cake she was eating than talking to us.
Upon viewing various cats we were prepared with multiple questions regarding past health issues, dietary needs, and social needs as the new cat would be coming to a home with an established adult male cat already present. The response we received was “THERE’S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING” we needed to know. The staff member who took us into the observation room was also very rude and dismissive and answered our questions with just one word wherever possible. We asked our questions and explained our needs and the staff member recommended a three-four year old girl named Taz. We agreed and filled out the application. A week later Taz was home with us.
Taz did not adjust well. Not disclosed during the adoption process was: a history of abuse and neglect (specifically around food), obesity, muscle wasting, nutrition restrictions, gingivitis, and in their own words: “timidity, fearfulness, and lots of stress.” These factors all led to a hard adjustment period where Taz initially did very well but after a couple of weeks stopped eating, drinking, or exploring, and lost half of her body weight.
The complementary insurance that I assume we paid for when we paid our $300 adoption fee was impossible to access. Every link we were sent to register was a dead link with no recommendations from the insurance company other than “wait and try again.” So any vet expenses that would occur because we adopted a cat without being told her full and accurate medical history would come out of our own pocket.
I contacted Bide Awhile with my concerns and while the Director was willing to refund my adoption fee and take Taz back I am furious that this was allowed to happen, that Taz was allowed to suffer, and that we were treated like a nuisance while trying to do the right thing and adopt an adult rescue animal with full mindfulness of her own story and medical history. While I have lost all faith in Bide Awhile I do believe it is best for Taz to be back in a familiar setting and pray she is doing well.
When we dropped Taz off again at the shelter staff was once more rude, condescending, and disrespectful. This employee should not be the face of a non-profit organization whose entire existence depends on goodwill and charitable donations.
The mission goal of this organization is good, however our experience with employees and adoption was so appalling that not only will we not adopt from this shelter again but we will never financially support then after seeing their true faces.
Do better, Bide Awhile. This was a truly heinous experience.

Amazing people here who really care about the animals and getting them the best they can get.

We adopted a wonderful kitten in February 2024 from Bide Awhile. She is chaos incarnate and an absolute delight.
I highly recommend anyone who would like to adopt the right pet for their home to go through Bide Awhile. Waiting for an appointment can take awhile but it is absolutely worth it.
My partner and I very much appreciated the appointment format. It gave us the chance to meet potential adoptee cats and kittens on their terms and allowed us to have a more in depth conversation with the employee who was showing us around about what we were looking for in a cat, as we already had an adult cat at home who was happy as an only cat.
The appointment gave us the time, space, and knowledge to adopt the right cat for our family. I highly recommend going through Bide Awhile to adopt your next animal.

We adopted a beautiful kitty here last month. The process was smooth and easy. We do appreciate that they actually call your references and do a follow up check and see how your kitty is settling in.
We definitely recommend them.

I want to say thank you so much for helping me with my fur babies! I have been reaching out doing my best to save animals all my life. But the last few years I’ve had to lean on you, ALL ! I would be far worse off. Your stuff is so wonderful loving caring patient. Thanks again for being my guardian angels.❤️
