Rustic yes...Location, location location... and Chef Tina in the Restaurant kitchen prepared for us the best meal we had in all our travels in NS. The fresh fish superb and the Chowder was AMAZING.. all others can not come close to comparing....locally sourced: Lobster, mussels, taters, and halibut and a few imported shrimp mixed in too. She came out and proudly to us she has been there 25 yrs, The entire staff was terrific!
The Marklands other amazing asset is the expansive beach cove. Please explore the beach! Try to go at low tide. I have an app "Tide Charts" that geolocates to help with the timing. Enjoy the wonderful rounded glacial beach pebbles, cross the little stream at the far end ( a few locals were taking a swim in it ) and explore the cliffs, walk back around to the pond estuary ... it's nature and Cape Britton at its best!
Nearby activities: The BEACH!

Staying at the Markham was the splurge of our trip but a worthwhile one. The very large, high-ceilinged room was beautiful, and the view (plus easy access to the water) was grand. We had fun playing corn toss, took a quick swim in the pool (only wish there was a hot tub!), and enjoyed the live music while we played games and read local history in the lobby. Dinner was delicious though we had to request a custom veg dinner due to limited options. Breakfast was THE BEST “continental” we’d ever had, full of homemade breads & muffins & biscuits/cookies, plus fruits, yogurts, and granola, as well as fresh juices, coffee, and tea.

Food & drinks: The Markland restaurant, with chef Patterson is sublime! This trip we just went to dinner and did not stay there (this time). A meal at the Markland is not to be missed. Halibut is like buddah. Creamy Seafood pasta is to die for.
Service is topshelf too.
Noteworthy details: Chef Patterson has excelled at local, fresh ingredients with something for everyone or will accommodate to your taste.

Our stay did not meet our expectations.
We had out of province guests who had never visited before. We booked a two bedroom cottage in April for a stay in late August. It was a rainy drizzly day but we could (and would) have sat on the porch in the evening, but we had the only cottage we could see without a covered porch. Also all cottages we could see had two Adirondack chairs except the one we were in. Strike two.
Dinner. Made reservations which was a good thing. The Barra MacNeils were playing that night. We were not going. I asked for a reservation between 6 and 7, and was given 6:30. Asked if we were going to the concert. No. Given the circumstances a 7pm dinner would have been better. I'd have rather waited until 7 than be given the worst table in the restaurant, which we had. Right next to the door, across from the bar and a wonderful view of the kitchen.
Waitress brought water and took drink orders. Came back and took food orders. Waited at least a half hour for food. Had to ask for bread (every other table had a bread basket) and more water. Steak, which was theoretically strip loin, was incredibly tough, full of tenderizer and incredibly expensive for what it was. Some of the steak was completely inedible. In their defense, the plate was full of reasonably good mashed potatoes, and did offer free dessert. ( I seriously don't know why restaurants think you want dessert when your meal was unsatisfactory. I don't want dessert. I wanted a steak I could eat.)
The other meals appeared OK, but one of our party had the halibut and then ordered at a different restaurant a few nights later and said it was superior to the Markland.
They were very busy that evening. Another reason a 7 pm reservation would have been better, since many diners were going to the 7:30 concert.
Accommodation was as expected, rustic but clean.
Disappointing to say the very least. We had stayed and eaten at the Markland before and this experience did not come close to that. Expensive to boot. Three stars for the breakfast. Everything else, not so much.

Absolutely stunning! I would live here in a heartbeat (minus the winters?). Location is beautiful, we woke up to a gorgeous sunrise over the ocean, took a stroll out to the beach, and were greeted by one of the best breakfasts of my life. Delicious pastries, great ambiance, super friendly staff. Dinner was 5/5 too. Pricey, but well worth it. Only quibble would be the laundry! 5$ for a load, really?
Rooms: We stayed in a deluxe cabin, which meant tons of floor space, a working kitchen (although we didn't use it much) and a full size fridge. Definitely recommend splurging on a deluxe since the normal cabins share (rather thin-looking) walls with the neighbors

We stayed for one night recently and wished we had stayed longer. We stayed in a log room with magnificent views of the ocean and a private beach. The room itself was rustic and very clean and the bed comfortable. There is no TV or wifi in the rooms but that was not a problem for us as we spent all the time we could exploring the beach. The included breakfast was so good with everything homemade. We had dinner at the restaurant and had a great experience. We started off with Mussels which were very good. For our mains we both had the Seafood Pasta which was excellent and loaded with seafood. It was a very generous portion and definitely a great value. We had chocolate cheesecake for dessert and it also was very good. After dinner we relaxed in the lobby listening to a local musician which was a fantastic touch. Everyone was very friendly and we would definitely stay here again.
Safety: We felt very safe and had no issues.
Walkability: It's a short walk to a private beach but you'll need to drive for anything else.
Food & drinks: Fantastic on-site restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We celebrated our 10th year anniversary at the Markland and stayed for the whole week. We were blown away by the beauty of the place but also the warmth and charm of the staff. We enjoyed the beach, live music at the lobby, the restaurant, the early morning sunsets, the pool, the friendliness of the staff. Everything was absolutely perfect. We cannot wait to come back!

We've been a few times and it is consistently a great experience.
The beach is a minute away from the cottage, which is very convenient with kids. Nice sandy beach.
There is a maid service if you want, which is great for a cottage vacation.
The cottages with kitchens are fully equipped, just need to buy food if you want to eat in.
The restaurant is quite nice, with some great options (salmon, steaks, mussels, lobster, etc). They do have a children's menu.
They have BBQs available next to the pool, if you want to grill your own meat.
Many evenings there is live music just next to the dining room. There's also a few tables with a puzzle, card games, etc.
The staff is really helpful and nice. They will recommend places to visit/activities to do if you need ideas.
Overall an amazing experience! They are very thoughtful.

The Markland was a fantastic stay. Our one-bedroom cottage was cozy, and the grounds were stunningly beautiful and peaceful. We loved the views, the beach, and the pool. The restaurant offered great gluten-free options, including gf bread at breakfast. Highly recommend!

What a spectacular place for a family vacation: the kids and dogs can run free while the adults just enjoy themselves and the beautiful, huge and gorgeous property!
Be sure to get the halibut if it is on the menu ?????
