So we then decided to give Butter Café a try since it was close by and I had never been. It’s a small establishment and there was a little bit of a wait, however we were able to get seated. At first glance of the menu, there was a wide array of dishes that also included vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-friendly. There were so many things that sounded good, it was actually hard for me to choose (not vegan or gluten-friendly of course). Friend one had been to Butter Café before but unfortunately did not enjoy the food. However, friend one was willing to give it another chance and this time went with the “Just Egg” omelette with caramelized onions and spinach, a side of the breakfast potatoes, and coffee. I discovered the previous day that friend one likes the coffee to be tongue burning hot. This however was not. It was good, but not nearly hot enough. Friend one enjoyed the omelette but felt it was a little too oily, perhaps from the onions that could have been caramelized a little more. The breakfast potatoes were nice w/ the crunchy bits, however lacked salt and pepper. You could see that there were herbs in the potatoes, however, you could not taste them. Friend two ordered the Paris omelette that included mushrooms, caramelized onions, and goat cheese, with a side of the breakfast potatoes. Friend two added spinach and bacon to the omelette which brought back memories of an omelette that was enjoyed in years past. The buttermilk pancake was sounding good as well, so one pancake was ordered, which was the size of the plate it was served on, 8-9 inches if I were to guess. When asked, “how was the pancake?” I was told, and I quote, “This pancake is life.” Friend one also ordered a lavender mimosa which was enjoyed while trying to guess what type of champagne was used. As for me, there were many choices, but I decided to also get the lavender mimosa and I have to say, it was the best mimosa I have ever had…..quite tasty. Probably b/c the champagne they used was not very dry. The lavender syrup was not overly floral tasting. The mimosa overall had a sweet taste that I enjoyed. I couldn’t make up my mind, so I decided to try a half order of the Chai French toast layered w/ mascarpone cheese. It was very good. The mascarpone was slightly sweet, which meant I did not need a lot of syrup. I was afraid that the chai spices might be overpowering, but there was only a hint of chai, which was great.Unfortunately, unlike the omelettes, the French toast did not come w/ any sides. My two pieces were looking pretty lonely on the plate. As I tried to bring forth a single tear so that my friends would take pity on me, I did something INEVER, EVER do for the purposes of these reviews, and that is try what someone else has on their plate. But since friend one had too many potatoes, most were put on my plate. I appreciated that they were more like smashed potatoes, but they were seriously lacking seasoning despite the visible herbs. Once I doctored them up w/ salt and pepper, they were really good. I also tried some of the pancake and for me, it wasn’t life-giving, but it was really good. So bottom line, I wouldn’t mind going back again and having the same thing or something different. And I definitely have to get the lavender mimosa, or perhaps one of the other flavors.

In town for the OHSAA boys basketball tournament and was looking for a great breakfast, found it at the Butter Cafe. The country breakfast skillet was awesome. I guarantee you we will return in the future.

This restaurant deserves a 0-star rating. Initially, I rely on Yelp reviews for choosing where to eat, but I can't control when others pick a spot (my sister this day). Despite reading reviews beforehand, I hoped the food gods would spare me from a disaster. Unfortunately, they let me down that day. What should have been an enjoyable family breakfast turned into a nightmare. Sloppy and chaotic service, an eyelash in my mimosa, and plastic in my black bean burger made it an awful experience. While my family ate, I couldn't because of disgust. My ordered food sat untouched. Complaining to an employee, I was assured the owner would be informed. Later, a woman with dark hair (the owner, I discovered) offered coffee and small talk. Shockingly, she didn't acknowledge the reported issues. At checkout, the burger remained on the bill, but two mimosas were removed. When we disputed the burger, the waitress removed it after a brief absence, presumably for approval. Approaching the owner, as I left, I expressed my frustration. How can you stand there without apologizing when serious issues were reported? Her demeanor and reaction to my concerns led me to believe she just doesn't know how to properly manage her own business. To the owner, it's time to step down and let someone else run this place. By the way, the place looks rundown, doesn't feel clean, and has a weird seating arrangement. perfect for Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares television show.

The average human body is composed of about 60% water. If you have eaten at Butter Cafe recently, about 5% of that is now oil.Waited over an hour after being told 15 minutes 4 times for what I can only describe as an oily shell of what this Cafe used to be. We were incredibly excited to bring out of town family to what had been on of our favorite breakfast spots, and we were rewarded with our go-to meals being uninspired, cold, oily and poorly seasoned. Our server was courteous and prompt, but that is the only positive part of this experience.Highly recommend going literally anywhere else for breakfast. There is even a Burger King across the street that would probably be better.

Overall mediocre experience. We have eaten here before and the food was delicious. However, we came back today and everything was different. The food was covered in oil, almost to a point that was inedible. Dishes that were ordered previously were very different now and not good. My husband attempted to talk to management about our experience today but they avoided him. I would suggest going elsewhere for brunch.

What was once a staple of downtown Dayton - heralded for their friendly service and incredible cuisine - has become downtrodden and disgusting. Oily plates, freezer-burned toast, and a black bean burger in place of actual black beans in their Huevos Racheros were the highlights from a dismal dining experience. I would be embarrassed and disgraced to recommend this establishment to anyone I care about.

I had corned beef hash and eggs. Beef was slices and tasted a bit tainted. I didn't complain but should have. Good coffee.

Everything about this place is amazing. From the decor to the staff to the food and atmosphere. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars. The breakfast was delicious! The staff was so kind and helpful. If you live in Dayton or passing through you need to stop here and have a meal.

The food was delicious. However, the service was very, very slow. Not only did we wait to be served initially, but we had to wait an excessive amount of time to get our food, to get a check, and to pay. Arrived for lunch on a Monday at 11:30, and did not leave until almost 1:00. Not acceptable.

Love love love! I have allergies to eggs, wheat and peanuts and was still able to find something super yummy and delicious it’s so hard to find gluten, egg, and peanut free food that actually tastes good ?

Food was absolutely amazing, service was fast and friendly. The restaurant itself is very cozy with art for sale around the walls. Menu had extensive vegetarian/vegan options. Only small complaint was that a few side items we requested they were out of.

Note: editedSince the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2020, this establishment has experienced a significant decline in quality due to the lack of care from its staff. Over the past two years, I have dined here multiple times, and without fail, their house potatoes have been nothing but hard, cold rocks with a crust. The Impossible burger, which I always order to my specifications, is consistently poorly made. It is filled with huge chunks of bitter lettuce that are burnt at the ends, indicating that they are old and moldy. The burger itself appears pre-cooked, pale, and far from hot. To make matters worse, the cheese is not even placed on the burger but carelessly tossed on top of the lettuce. It's absolutely ridiculous! If you happen to glance at the grill from the counter, you will easily notice the dirtiness and lack of cleanliness. It is clear that the waiters lack the common sense to check the orders and question the sloppy preparation and plating by the cooks. Here's another example of a disappointing experience at this establishment: I was just seated, and the waiter brought me a glass of lemon water along with the table setup, giving the impression that everything was fresh. However, when I went to the restroom and returned, everything was gone. The waiter had to start over again. It's unbelievable how the young staff members lack attention to detail and seem unaware of what they are doing. And mind you, the restaurant wasn't even busy at the time.It seems that Dayton, Ohio restaurants, particularly those on Brown Street, have a common issue with poorly trained and managed young employees. Perhaps the owners are hesitant to discipline their staff for fear of causing a commotion and losing these young workers. However, based on my observations, the older adults working in the kitchen are even worse than the students in the UD area. Needless to say, I will never waste my time returning to Butter Cafe. Before 2020, Butter Cafe was a fantastic place to dine.
