My son with autism and an IEP was dismissed from the program without being heard because he did not get along with Steven Yates the week before.

I had worked at K12 Gallery and TEJAS for almost five years before I was terminated. My experiences before my termination were, personally, not so bad. The program director and my colleagues I had direct contact with were wonderful. They all cared so much about the student and developing our relationships with them further to expand our programs and give them the best learning experience. However, through this time my boss, Jerri Stanard, was not so threatening to me as she was to my other coworkers. Many experiences of her claiming she would fire them if they didn’t accomplish a specific task (usually a quite difficult one, something that needs a certain response from the other end and we weren’t getting the right answer she wanted), countless times I remember comforting my coworkers after she made them cry and after some of us did not attend her Christmas party she threatened our bonuses telling us if we didn’t come next time, we wouldn’t receive them. Many other issues, one of them also being her not coming into the building except for maybe once a week and still filing that she is an employee instead of the owner so she can profit, etc.Through all of this, I kept my distance and did my job as needed. However, during this time of the COVID-19 crisis, I had to speak to Jerri directly about her behavior. After convincing her we cannot hold classes of 10 or more, due to the President’s orders she still insisted on staying open, regardless of how non-essential our business is. Previously I expressed my roommate is immunocompromised and my worry with the virus. I let her know I would work from home, contacting my students online like I would be doing at K12. Long story short, after trying to convince me to come in to work alone at night (even after two break ins the previous week), after not helping me adjust my teaching to satisfy her, like I had asked several times and after taking away both my vacation weeks and sick days she terminated me. In my letter of termination it states she fired me for quarantining myself during COVID-19. Which, in essential business orders it states several times you must allow employees to work from home if you can. I digress.Needless to say, my time here was nothing short of wonderful. I seriously cannot express how much it meant to me and what I learned. But no on deserves her treatment and I urge those who are interested in this nonprofit to seek out a job where your skills can be better utilized. I was always reminded I was replaceable by Jerri. Everyone who has worked there and will work there are replaceable to her.I wish there were more people that spoke out about their experiences there. We were all so stressed but knew it was important to those we taught and we loved that. I think we all agreed the opportunity and environment were not the problem, but when the person in charge consistently brings toxic energy. It is hard to avoid the negativity after awhile. I encourage you to consider where you take your students and where you apply for work, with this specific organization.
