They charged me a $20 "After Hours Service Fee" despite that I returned my rental during their operating hours. I don't recommend.

This place is terrible. I made a reservation with them a couple years ago to pick up a truck and when I got there the gate was locked, this was during the afternoon on a weekday. There was a couple other people trying to return their trucks too and no one could figure out what was going on. I talked to the mechanic next door and he said this happens all the time and he, "doesn't know how they stay in business." I called uhaul and they ended up directing me to another location to pick up a truck. By the time I got off the phone with them (after about 30 min) a single employee returned and acted like nothing was wrong. It was ridiculous. I will never trust this location again.

Whatever you do if or when you need a U-haul in the Oakland area do not, I SAY AGAIN DO NOT USE the 640 W. MacArthur uhaul location, and don't allow the website or the national uhaul to assign you to the 640 W. MacArthur uhaul location. They are thieves!!! I requested a specific location for my uhaul. It was NOT 640 W. MacArthur. I went to the location I requested when they didn't have the size vehicle I requested, we negotiated for a different size vehicle. Apparently, uhaul had assigned me 640 MacArthur; so while I driving my uhaul from my requested location, 640 MacArthur who never called me or notified me - charged me $50.00 b/c my CC information was on the original request. When I call the national uhaul number, and they placed a request for the GM from the 640 W. MacArthur location to call me - guess what (SILENCE) no call, no email no nothing...just took my $50.00. They don't answer the phone, and their VM is full. I'll be contacting the Better Business Bureau Monday. Did I mention: DON'T USE THIS UHAUL LOCATION

The building looks great. My Grandpa was John Strachan who owned Johnny’s Sohio Station until they moved to Arizona in the early 70’s. I remember when Cooper’s Twist & Shake was built. Great memories. Unfortunately the pictures are packed away.

Came here for my U-Haul rental to find it was also a market and take out style Mexican restaurant. The food smelled amazing; I didn't try any of it bc it was all meat based and I don't eat meat. If you're a meat eater, you may want check it out. The market had a lot of fresh produce and foods. I wanted to buy a bunch of their salsas because they looked amazing (I was gonna be on the road fir 8 hours with no way to keep them cold so I sadly had to pass). Anyway, the u-haul process was super smooth. I was in and out quickly with a contactless check in and inspection. The gentleman that initially helped me at the register was very nice.

I would give them zero stars if that were possible. The manager refused to try running my Chase debit/credit card through his machine, because it said "debit" on it and their policy is only credit cards for pickup trucks. I told him it was a credit card also, but he would even TRY! Total j**** I asked him what kind of business are you running here? I called their headquarters to complain and she tried to call him, but he didn't answer the phone. He and his pals (employees?) were just hanging out in the lot. He told me he wouldn't give me a truck, no matter what. The person at their HQ sent me up to the one on Sixth St. in Berkeley. No problem with the card, totally friendly and professional there. The upside? U-haul sent me $50 because their reservation guarantee for the truck I had reserved online (and for which I had used my chase card to do so).

These guys Have 1 person working there, the wait time is unreasonable. I was accused of an accident I wasn't in from this franchise location later apologized for the misunderstanding. Now it happened again yesterday and we purchased the insurance. I'm glad all my calls are also recorded on my end so I can speak to a lawyer about these bogus claims. Would never rent or recommend renting from these guys obviously.

This was a disappointing experience and unfortunately this business will receive a 1 star review over $12.15. He claims he gave me a full gas tank in a Ford F150 truck but he did not, it was roughly 7/8 full. Even if he did, I drove 37 miles based on the odometer and put in 2 gallons of gas before returning the car. A Ford F150 is up to 21 MPH so this should be enough but he decided to charge another $12.15. I'm disappointed and won't be coming back.

I actually had a decent experience here, but am rating it 2-stars because they charged me 50% more than my original subtotal. Admittedly, the contract they give you does say that failure to return equipment by the "Rental Due Time" may result in additional charges, but it feels a bit slimy to charge $20 extra for returning my rental at 3:59pm rather than 3:30pm, especially because someone was their and picked it up from me. Their contract says that you can avoid the $20 after-hours convenience fee by verifying your return on your mobile device, but when I asked the guy who accepted my truck return if anything was needed from me, he said no . Ultimately, things just didn't seem as transparent to me as they could have, and I haven't been able to successfully reach them over the phone to ask for clarification on the matter.

I received an invoice saying I used 100 miles more than what I used, charging $100 more than it should. Is this a joke? I sent an email contesting the price and haven't heard back yet. Avoid if you can, they are going to rip you off.

I reserved a cargo van online, which was pretty seamless. When I arrived, the check out was okay as well... the desk person had me take photos of my DL on a link he sent to my phone. The check out and check in went very smooth and the prices are very reasonable. The reason for my 1 star review is the lack of upholding customer service values. As we all know, customer service is what keeps customers coming back- and I will certainly not be coming back to this location. A day after returning my rental I got my invoice and noticed a $20 convenience fee. On my contract it was stated that this fee would be charged only if I did not complete the web check in upon turn in of the vehicle. Which I did. When I called corporate, they told me the fee applied because the GPS said I was .95 miles away, which is absurd because I was at most 15 feet away parked on the street where I was told to park after hours. Corporate said they don't issue refunds and I needed to call the store. Then I called the franchise and the first time I was hung up on. The second time, I didn't even have to say who I was or a contract number and the receptionist already knew what I was talking about- it seems like a common scheme to omit information upon check out in order to tack on the $20 convenience fee. What I was most appalled about, he kept disrespectfully telling me "read your contract! It's in the contract! You didn't do a web check-OUT". I asked him well; I spent 10 minutes at your desk; I assumed that was the check out. He said NO READ YOUR CONTRACT!! All in all, I am always very conscious of language barriers affecting the instructions and clarity of transactions, and I am positive that the clerk THOUGHT his instructions were clear, but he was obviously wrong. This review is to highlight his disrespect and brutal disregard for basic customer service principles. I know it's just $20 but I feel deceived. P.S. for corporate purposes I recommend a small "check list" for customer reference. I.e. "don't forget! 1. Check out on the app 2. Fuel your car before returning 3. Complete web check in" Easy.

Well what to say about this place. Went in there to get a U-Hal, guy talking on his phone for last 20 minutes and didn't care if he has a customer in front of him. After his so important phone call he had the attitude to tell me to go somewhere else. Whatever you do not use this U-hall service.

I picked up a van that had a quarter of a tank of gas. I was charged $7 for gas upon returning the van even though I returned it at a quarter of tank. I took pictures as proof and was still told I owed for gas. I had to ask the attendant to stop the couple who was about to drive off in the truck. We both looked at it and it read a quarter of a tank. I am very disappointed to know that Uhaul is ripping people off like this. The attendant refunded me but said that the truck was slightly on an incline downward and that is why the gas read incorrect. I took my pictures while the truck was leveled. I will never rent at this location again and will ALWAYS be sure that my final charges are correct before leaving. Also they take money under the table. I paid $7 cash for a dolly because I forgot to add it at time of rental. It was not included on my final receipt so that means it was put in somebody's pocket.

Everything was fine until I went to go return the truck. I tried to return the truck at 8am (which they were not open for, despite various sources saying that was the opening time), and when I couldn't get into the driveway to leave the vehicle, I called Customer Services. They told me to park the truck nearby and leave a note saying where it was parked. An employee called me the next day telling me they couldn't find the truck and that I was going to be charged for an extra full day. Was also charged for a dolly that I never got. Not renting from here again
