“I've always wanted to frame my four children's baptism gowns to hang on the wall. But, I wasn't sure how to go about a project that large. Jeff was extremely knowledgable and helpful. “I am not born and raised in Youngstown. I have a mere 11 years under my belt. But I love this Valley & proudly call it home. And I'm alarmed that many Youngstown natives have NEVER been to The Butler. This museum is first rate and dead red in the center of the YSU campus! Firstly, it LOOKS like a museum from the outside. I dig museums that are in almost garish, funkily designed buildings, as well as hole in the wall locations that are in up-cycled spaces. But the exhibits at The Butler are def at home in a classic, imposing building. The museum is painting heavy, so maybe not the greatest place for young kids. And not being an art aficionado, I find some of the works to be awe-inspiring while others look like they should be hanging by magnets on grandma's fridge. The museum features paintings by a multitude of different artists, among them are some heavy hitters; Winslow Homer, Jackson Pollock (yuck) and Andrew Wyeth. Being a caveman who considers 80's heavy metal album covers the pinnacle of artistic expression, I'm not the art critic you came for. But my favorites include the audiokinetic sculptures of George Rhoads (think Rube Goldberg devices and you'll get an idea) and David Durlach's "Dancing Trees II". It is interactive & looks like a living, breathing entity (or entities) from another world, and I can't help but feel the malice from this piece. Love it.”
