Historic Fort Steuben is a fully reconstructed 18th century fort on its original site overlooking the Ohio River. It is a definite stop on any vacation or local trip, offering lots to see, learn and photograph. The fort itself is a landmark in the city, with eight furnished buildings carefully set as they would have been, giving a real feel of early American life on the Ohio frontier. The attached park is a refreshing green space and a centerpiece of the community, featuring the Veterans Memorial Fountain with water spouts that shoot in different directions. The Visitor Center is open all year and houses an exhibit room with old artifacts in glass cabinets, both permanent and changing displays, a great gift shop, and a mini-art gallery. It also provides visitor information for the area. The fort welcomes school groups, travelers, and history buffs throughout the year, putting on a lot of fun and good activities for the public, including summer concerts at the Berkman Amphitheater and special celebrations for events like the 4th of July and Christmas. During the Christmas season, the area features the city tree and many nutcrackers, with a little shopping village to buy wares. It is an awesome place that teaches historical facts while providing enjoyable things to do for visitors of all ages.
We did the Steubenville Mural walking tour. You can pick up a map at the Fort visitor center. It was really neat to listen to the audio information while looking at the murals. They had great explanations and helped the history to come alive!
