Please read. From the moment my family of 3 walked in this facility, we should have walked out. Not only does the hot ammonia smell hit you HARD (this may be expected, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with Allen Co. which smelled of lemon!) but then we were greeted kindly with “How can we help you, we close at 4:00” … Albeit, it was about 3:30, and I knew they closed at 4, but as a first shift worker.. well, it was 3:30 or never :( I felt so bad, but we continued on because my 5 year old wanted to look so badly.
We did not roam around freely, she pointed us to specific cats that may fit our needs, while another older woman followed us 4 around silently. Felt weird to me, but they did close soon, so maybe that’s why. I still don’t know why 2 people walked us around if they needed to get ready to close so badly. She never spoke one word. That was odd to me.
The young girl kept telling us that many of the cats weren’t socialized, still in quarantine for exposure to diseases, etc. Some of that was expected… but by the end, my fiancé and I joked that she didn’t want us to take any of them home! However, after she took us back to the “open cat room” we fell in love with one.
As I was cuddling up to this stinky cute little cat, my son reached for another, VERY gently I must add, and the girl GRABBED my son’s arm and quickly said “don’t touch him he’ll scratch you!” We quickly left, furious. She apologized multiple times, but honestly I was shaking so bad, my momma bear heart just had to get out of there before I flipped out.
Against my better judgment, we all still decided we wanted the cat. Upon approval, I show up to pick up the 5 mo old cat. After paying the $75 fee and signing paperwork, I’m told he is not neutered yet and they’ll call me in 1-2 months to bring him back to do it through their vet for free. This was news to me, i thought he was fixed. Then I’m told he needs a rabies vaccine and needs tested for leukemia and heart worms in order to be around my other cat. None of this was disclosed prior.
The next day, my vet of 17 years was SHOCKED that this 8 lb cat was NOT NEUTERED. They can be fixed at 3 pounds. My total for the vet bill was $225. (Allen co charges the same adoption fee of $75 but did all the vaccines and tests needed. I paid under $60 for my first cats initial visit at the same vet a year prior. Just a thought when adopting anywhere- be sure to ask ahead of time to see the paperwork, and don’t feel bad asking a vet for a quote prior to signing papers for a shelter animal. I refuse to send this cat back to these people to be fixed, so I will be paying another $300 for my trusted vet to neuter him with proper medication. To add injury to insult, the dang cat is NOT litter box trained. Most likely due to him marking territory because he is.. say it with me now folks….. NOT NEUTERED!! When I told them this on the phone they acted shocked. But based on the smell of their building alone, it’s quite clear they wouldn’t know if any animal peed, sprayed or anything because it is SO BAD in there. Overall, start to finish, it’s been a very stressful, very emotional, and expensive experience. I wouldn’t send a stuffed animal here, let alone anything with a heartbeat. I hope this review is taken into consideration as they move forward with their business in the future.

The biggest joke of a “Humane Society” I’ve ever come by. Dealt with this place on more than one occasion where they refuse to help animals in need and always have a BS excuse why they can’t help but as long as you have money to spend on the animals they barely care for they’re happy to help ya there! Wouldn’t recommend, they don’t stand for anything they say they do. “Helping animals” my ass.. just a glorified pet shop.

Not very helpful. The process is too long for adoption. Applications are not taken seriously.

We called to see about dropping off puppies that we are unable to to take and the lady at the front desk refused us unless we would agree to get our mother dog fixed she is a joke a dog came up and chewed our lead and it's our fault?

I really appreciate the super friendly staff here, they helped us with the adoption of our most recent member of our fur family. They shared a wealth of helpful knowledge that has helped the adoption process during our visits to their Humane Society location. We highly recommend this location!

Thank you Auglaize County Humane Society for your hard work and caring for these animals. You've followed up on our adopted dog Rufus each year since we brought him into our home. He's a great dog and we all love him.

I adopted my loving cat 4 years ago. She is all I could hope for. The staff was so helpful and caring. They let me take all the time I needed to pick just the right one. And I did get just the right one.

If I could give ZERO stars I would. They would rather give a pet to a 20 year old with no track record of actually caring for a pet than to people who have cared for pets 40 years, including our last dog for 17 years. These pets with a younger couple will frequently be alone for hours while their owners are working long hours. My husband is completely retired and I am semi retired, the dog would never be alone. Very flawed process and lots of dishonesty, if you have the money up front you will likely get the pet that day. We didn't bring the money immediately because they told us it would take several days to be approved. We didn't appreciate being lied to, management is very poor. They have a history of deceit and incompetence.

The main woman at the desk is extremely rude and she lies and threatened to call the cops on me over an unrelated incident after talking to my vet because she was to busy talking to a little girl who worked there to listen to me when I was telling her about the dog I was dropping off. She has absolutely no business working there. There is absolutely more to the story but this is a good enough summary.
